Mark Barban Obituary

Mark David Barban, D.D.S., 48, of Midlothian and Deltaville, Virginia, died Monday, September 30, 2002 in the Johnston-Willis Medical Center after a courageous and inspirational battle with cancer. Dr. Barban graduated from the VCU-MCV School of Dentistry in 1985, the VCU-MCV School of Pharmacy in 1979 and the College of William and Mary in 1977. He was an active member of the Pi Lambda Phi fraternity and maintained close ties with his fraternity brothers until his death. Dr. Barban was a native of Cape Charles, Va. He is survived by his wife, Susan Harrow Barban; and two sons, David Harrow Barban and Philip Sidney Barban; his mother, Fern Copenhaver Barban; a sister, Valerie Travis and her husband, Butch Travis; two brothers, Kim Barban and his wife, Kate and Brian Barban and his wife, Debbie; and five nieces and five nephews. In addition, Dr. Barban is survived by his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Walter and Betty Harrow. He is also survived by a brother-in-law, Allen Harrow and his wife, Cathy; sister-in-law, Sharon Brann and her husband, Reggie. He was preceded in death by his father, Stanley L. Barban. In addition to his dental practice, which he maintained from 1985 to the present, Dr. Barban was active with the Richmond Dental Society, serving on numerous committees as well as the Board of Directors. He was a founding member of the Midlothian Study Club and a member of the Appolonia Dental Study Club. He was active as a Clinical Instructor at the VCU-MCV School of Dentistry, and he provided charitable dental services through Missions of Mercy, Donated Dental Services, CARITAS and others. Dr. Barban also practiced pharmacy in the Richmond community from 1979 to 1990. He participated in Indian Guides, was a Chesterfield Little League sponsor and coach, earned his Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do and was an avid hunter and fisherman. Those who were blessed to know him will remember with fondness his quick wit, depth of character, strong intellect and dedication to his friends. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Huguenot Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1020 Huguenot Road, where services will be held Thursday, 7 p.m. Graveside services will be held Friday, 2 p.m. at the Cape Charles Cemetery, Cape Charles, Va. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to the MCV Foundation, P.O. Box 980234, Richmond, Va. 23298 or your favorite charity.
