Mark Walton Obituary

WALTON, Mark Charles, 71, of Chester, Va passed away peacefully, surrounded by family and friends on 30 Jan 2024 after a brief illness. He is predeceased by his parents Harry and France Walton. He is survived by sisters Colette Gailliot, Monique Walton and brother Gregg, many special cousins, and his Beloved, Valeria Murphy (babydoll). A special thank you goes out to all those who loved and supported Mark during his illness, especially his medical angel.

Born in Washington, DC in 1952, raised in Kensington, MD and Frankfurt, Germany. Mark graduated from The Catholic University of America in Washington, DC with a degree in Music Education. He joined the Air Force ROTC and his passion for flying "took off" from there.

During his tenure in the Air Force Mark flew the F-111's and was selected for the prestigious AF's Fighter Weapons School. In 1986 Mark lead the overall planning for Operation Eldorado Canyon, the longest aerial strike mission from Europe since WW II, and a decisive blow against terrorism. Returning to the United States, Mark joined the Virginia Air National Guard flying the A7 and F16 aircraft and flying combat missions in Iraq . Mark finished his military career as a Lieutenant Colonel serving his country for over 21 years.

After leaving the Air Force, Mark went on to fly for Northwest Airlines (now Delta) and retired as a Captain with over 30 years of service. On his final flight, loved ones were among his passengers.

Mark played trombone throughout his life, from high school to studying with John Marsalis at The Catholic University of America, to playing in the brass section of a DC area popular cover band in the 70's, Fancy Colours. While stationed in England, Mark played trombone in the Oxford Symphony Orchestra. He was even known to carry his trombone mouthpiece to practice for church band on his commercial flights (much to the entertainment and dismay of those around him). He kept his "chops" in shape to play for Easter and Christmas masses at his local parish, St. Michael's in Richmond until he gave up his Trombone to a special person to carry on for him.

Mark was like that. Generous, caring and loving to his family and the tremendous family of friends he was blessed with over the course of his life.

There will be no funeral at this time but a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Have a toast with your favorite beverage in his honor.

"Once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward, for there you have been and there you will always long to be." - Leonardo da Vinci

John Boy, you were one of my favorite Captains to fly with at Delta. Not only an extraordinary gentleman but an outstanding pilot. The layers of your onion were never ending. I loved our conversations about music, Chicago and that Russian band that played Chicago tunes. I consider myself lucky to be called a friend.

I sent you a text, when you finally upgraded to a "real" phone in January of 2024 wishing you a happy new year. Mark responded "nice picture" Little did I know that your angels were waiting for you so soon. Sadly, life gets in the way while raising two boys and getting them into college, and I just discovered why he never responded after that and it´s August 2025. For that, I´m gutted and disappointed I never got to say goodbye.

He helped me with getting my dad to the other side with Alzheimer´s. He had a kind and listening ear, mischievous smile and hearty laugh.

Thanks for the dinners with you and Val on layovers in RIC.

You´ll be missed P-WSO, John Boy!

So sorry to hear of Mark's passing. I had the privilege of serving with him in the 77th TFS. I can´t put my finger on why but there are certain aircrew that make an impression on you, and you never forget them. My job in the squadron was to take care of the aircrew´s flying equipment and I was just a lowly enlisted guy, but anytime I had to talk with him on some issue I always felt he respected what I had to do. This photo was one I shot while we were TDY to Turkey waiting for our return flight to England. I like it because it gives a hint to his mischievous side. Clear skies sir.

Mark was my instructor pilot when I arrived at RAF Upper Heyford-a fine one at that. It was a pleasure to fly and learn from him. Godspeed.

Like Doc Senechal, I knew Mark at RAF Upper Heyford. He was one of my instructors for my initial Mission Qualification training and continued to be a friend during my time in the F-111. Always someone you could count on - it saddens me to hear of his death.

I was a flight surgeon for the 77th TFS in RAF Upper Heyford in the mid-1980´s. Mark was my favorite IP to fly with. I was totally impressed with this fighter pilot who also played the trombone with the Oxford Symphony. He was a true renaissance man and a great friend.

Mark was just a great guy and in all respects! I had the honor to be crewed with him at RAF Upper Heyford in the F-111E after he'd graduated from the USAF FWS. I believe to this day that he was the only music major I ever flew with and I have over 2,200 F-111 hours (most of that as an instructor and FWS instructor). I vividly remember flying "Alexander's Pass" with him during deployments to Incirlik AB, Turkey in the early '80s: This was a deep, narrow, challenging bit of canyon flying and I can say that Mark never scared me (though several others did). When I met Mark, he was already an avid Chivas Regal connoisseur. I was really happy to have the opportunity to talk with him again at the F-111 Memorial dedication in October 2022 -- though we did not reminisce as long as would have liked, he was still the same guy I knew in 1982! I believe we'd both become single malt scotch drinkers -- we all move on. I am so sorry to hear that Mark is no longer with us (we're all poorer for his absence) and I will definitely throw a nickel on the grass (well, snow right now where I'm at) and drink a double-shot of Glenfiddich in his honor. Here's to Mark Walton, the smoothest hands in the F-111 community! Hear! Hear!

Mark was an essential part of Northwest/Delta Flight Operations. Great pilot, fun to have a trip with, and a great mentor to the younger pilots....

Man-Myth-Legion Mark (SAC-Supreme Airline Commander for those of us who flew with him at the airlines) will never be forgotten!
Great friend and mentor; he took me under his wing and taught me the Airbus.
We had our CQs together for the remainder of NWA legacy, attended JB concerts in the Caribbean on the Pearl, and shared a many war stories.
Only the few know of the reason why the famous mission he planned was called Eldorado Canyon. Love you brother! You are now an angel in spirit.
