Martin Bannon Obituary
Marty was born in Norfolk and raised in Ocean View and graduated from the Holy Trinity School in Ocean View. In addition to being an outstanding student, Marty excelled as an athlete, signing a professional baseball contract with the Washington Senators Organization of the American League. He also played in several State Open golf championships over the years. In 1942, he married Miss Doris Anita Herr of Baltimore, Md. His beloved Doris passed in 1992 as they approached their 50th wedding anniversary.
Marty joined the Chesapeake & Potomac Telephone Co. of Virginia in 1939, retiring in 1990 from Executive Management after 51 years of service. He began his career in Norfolk, then Washington, D.C. and finally Richmond, Va. in 1954. He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America.
Marty and Doris are survived by their five children, Sharon B. Rosenstock of Omaha, Neb., Martin J. Bannon III (Lori) of Richmond, Va., Stephen K. Bannon of Washington, D.C., Christopher T. Bannon (Cindy) of Tucson, Ariz., Mary Elizabeth Bannon Meredith (Stuart) of Pinehurst, N.C.
Marty's faith was the guidepost of his life and anchored his love of family, community, country, company, neighbors and friends. He was a very humble, loyal and generous man all the days of his life.
Martin had one brother, Lawrence G. Bannon of Cape Charles, Va. He and Doris had 15 grandchildren, James A. Rosenstock of Richmond, Va., Christopher D. Rosenstock of Washington, D.C., Kelly R. Nogg (Jeff) of Omaha, Neb., Sarah B. Barlup (Matthew) of El Segundo, Calif., Kathryn B. Nebera (Ryan) of Midlothian, Va., Cary B. Williamson (Josh) of Richmond, Va., Michael Roman Bannon of Richmond, Va., Maureen E. Bannon of Moseley, Va., Emily Piccard Bannon of Seattle, Wash. and Madeleine Piccard Bannon of Portland, Ore., Thomas Bannon (Jessica) of Phoenix, Ariz., Sean Bannon of Miami, Fla., Jack Bannon of Tucson, Ariz., Robert Hunter Smith III of Arlington, Va., Christopher Davis Smith of Washington, D.C. and Lindsay M. McCarson (James) of Richmond, Va.; as well as 13 great-grandchildren.
Five years after Doris Bannon's passing, Marty met and married Mrs. Margaret Satchwell of Norfolk, who would become his wife of 24 years. Margaret and Marty enjoyed an active retirement in and around Richmond and were great hosts to the many family visits. He is also survived by her children, Cindy Kersey (Mark) of Dallas, Texas, Gini Hoffman (Bobby) of Chesapeake, Va. and Michael Satchwell of Virginia Beach, Va.; along with three stepgrandchildren.
The family received friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, February 1 at Bliley's Funeral Home Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Ave., Richmond, Va., where a Christian Wake was held at 7 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Benedict Catholic Church, 300 N. Sheppard St., Richmond, Va. at 11 a.m. Wednesday, February 2. This event will also be livestreamed and can be accessed through Bliley's website at blileys.com. Burial to follow.

Dear family. There are no words to express the loss. "Marty Bannon" has been a name and personality I grew up with as if he were an uncle. They so enjoyed each other - even at the humorous expense of others. The consistent antics of "the Wizard" is a memory I'll never forget. My dad would be crying in hysterics. I never met Mr. Bannon nor his famous son Stephen K who is near two years younger than I but saw him via Internet video streaming during a recent political event. By all accounts he was a good and gracious man, same age as my mother who died in 2015 age 94, her and Dad passing that year 5 months short of their 75th wedding anniversary. May he rest In peace.

Only met Marty a few times, years ago. He made a strong impression on me. A very kind man, complete with a warm smile, Southern charm, and a magnificent Tidewater accent. He had a kind of laid back, Commanding presence, the type of man you immediately look up to and feel secure with, like everything is going to be alright. Calm. I have, and will always miss him.
