ROGERS, Michael David, 76, passed away peacefully on November 12th, 2023. Born in Washington, D.C., to the late Jack Rogers and Edna Savastone, Mike grew up in Arlington, Virginia, and graduated from Yorktown High School in 1964. Deferring college for military service, he served in the U.S. Army and was a proud member of The U.S. Army Band. He then attended Old Dominion University, where he met the love of his life, Johanna. They were married for over 52 years. He graduated in 1972 with a degree in accounting, and worked for the state of Virginia and Henrico County throughout his long career as a CPA. Mike's real passion was building, construction, and figuring out how things worked. He could take anything apart and put it back together. Whether his assistance was needed changing a lightbulb, replacing an electrical switch, or building a garage, he loved nothing more than helping his family and friends. Mike built two of his homes with his own hands. His other great passion was playing the saxophone, and he continued to play most recently with the Richmond Concert Band. Mike was preceded in death by parents Jack Rogers and Edna Savastone, father-in-law Walter Kinney, and sister-in-law Charlene Rogers. He is survived by his loving wife, Johanna Rogers; children Kelly (Eric) Buxton and Justin Rogers; grandchildren, Claire, Charlotte, and Oliver Buxton; sisters, Kathleen (Rod) Hayslett and Judy (Alan) Lambert; brothers, John (Vicky) Rogers and James Rogers; mother-in-law, Eleonore Kinney; brother-in-law, Lester (Diana) Kinney, and nine nieces and nephews and their families. He will be remembered by all who knew him as a loving husband, father, grandfather, and brother; as a connoisseur of dad jokes and funny t-shirts; as someone who loved people and who would and could talk to anyone at anytime, and as a loyal, helpful, and kind friend. We will miss him dearly.

A viewing and visitation is planned for Sunday, November 19th, from 2 to 5 p.m. at Bennett Funeral Home, 14301 Ashbrook Parkway, in Chesterfield. A celebration of life will be scheduled at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to your favorite charity.

I think about Mike quite often. I miss the times we worked together in our community. Never forgotten my friend. We will meet again.

I was unaware of Mike´s passing until noting a 2024 program posting by the Richmond Concert Band RCB) As stated by Randal and others here, there was no task too big or bothersome for Mike in helping others. I recall working with him in helping transport chairs and equipment from field concerts back to the Tabernacle church. He had us all laughing, not cursing, at the somewhat cumbersone nature of the church elevator. Mike exemplified the ideal community band member by modeling modesty (no pretense), understated competence, and a consistent focus on team results, not himself.

I was a member of the Richmond Concert Band a few years ago. I was talking to a friend about needing to get a transport chair for my wife. Mike overheard the conversation and jumped right in with, "I can get you one." We met a few days later and we went to his in-laws house and got the chair. It was Brand New! It was a lot better than the chairs I had been looking at online. My wife liked it, too. And as her Parkinson's progressed, we were able to continue to easily keep her doctors appointments and have an active social life. Although I said it many times to you, "Thank you Mike".

I had the pleasures of having Mike as my supervisor many yeas ago at the Department of Taxation. Mike is a special person, once he friend you, its forever. He set up my son's first computer for Christmas years ago. While still working for him, my water heater broke. Mike to rescue, and there you have it. He replaced it the same day. Mike is a true friend who Loved his family and life. Mikie take your rest, you were loved. Family, Earth has no Sorrow that Heaven cannot Heal. You are in my prayers. Be Blessed! Roz Terry

I worked with Mike at DVS for 3 years and learned a lot about state government in that time. We remained friends after that. He was a great man and he will be forever missed. My condolences to his family.

My path crossed Michael´s many times during my career with Virginia state government. He was the consummate professional and a pleasure to deal with. My late wife Jeanette Wilson considered him a friend and mentor. I am saddened by his passing. My condolences to his family and friends.

To Johanna and family I am sorry to hear of Mike's passing. My heartfelt condolences. Mike hired me at the Department of Taxation for the Commonwealth of Virginia. It was my pleasure to work for him. While I only worked for him the last few of years of his tenure with the state, what I learned from him had immeasurable value. I was and always will be grateful to him for sharing his knowledge and being a friend.
