Patrick White Obituary

WHITE, The Rev. Patrick "Pat" Joseph, 67, of Richmond, Virginia passed away peacefully on January 19, 2022, surrounded by family, after a 15-month-long battle with pancreatic cancer. Pat's ability to keep everyone laughing, despite his own pain and his determination to the very end, stand as a testament to a man that always worked hard and was happiest when making others smile.

Born in Havre, Montana, Pat's family moved all over the world until settling in Central Virginia. After graduating Hopewell High School in 1972, he attended Washington and Lee for a short time before joining the Navy. Pat served as a Petty Officer First Class on the USS America from 1975 to 1981. Upon honorably discharging, he moved to Richmond and met the love of his life, Katherine, with whom he had three children. He then worked full-time in the IT field, while attending Virginia Commonwealth University to complete his degree. After a successful career serving as IT Director for Overnite Transportation and Markel Corporation, Pat took an early retirement to teach Theology at Benedictine College Preparatory. His time at Benedictine, from 2003 until 2016, involved the impossible task of getting a bunch of teenage boys to become faith-filled men, and one he achieved to the befuddlement of all. Pat saw the opportunity to help teach more people about their faith, so he became a Deacon in 2015 after receiving a master's degree in Theology from St. Leo's University. Serving St. Bridget Parish, he was able to guide many to the Catholic Church and helped many more grow deeper in their faith. Deacon Pat got the distinct opportunity to be on the alter with the Pope Francis in 2015, while Mass was being said in the Vatican for the Jubilee of Deacons. His kind and caring attitude, his ability to crack a joke and his dedication to service will be sorely missed in the community, but will continue to be an inspiration to many.

Pat was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence E. White and Juanita M. White; sister, Juliana Pearson. He is survived by his loving wife, Katherine; children, Elizabeth Singleton (Matthew), Christopher (Rebecca) and Bridget; two grandchildren, Lilly and Harvey Singleton; sisters, Charlene Morgan-Carr and Catherine Morgan (Dave); and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

There will be a public visitation held at Saint Bridget Catholic Church on January 25, 2022 between 4 and 7 p.m., with a Christian Vigil Service to follow at 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at Saint Bridget Catholic Church, 6006 Three Chopt Rd., on Wednesday, January 26, 2022 at 11 a.m. Interment will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. To accommodate those unable to attend in person, both the Vigil and Funeral Mass will be livestreamed – please visit Pat's obituary page at blileys.com for the links to both events. Memorial contributions may be made in Pat's memory to Benedictine College Preparatory, 12829 River Road, Richmond, Va. 23238 or VCU Massey Cancer Center, Box 843042, Richmond, Va. 23284-3042.

Pat was a great man and teacher. I had the privilege of working with him and teaching his son many years ago.
