Richard Spencer Obituary
July 16, 1935 - August 22, 2025
Richard George Spencer Jr. (Dickie), age 90, passed away peacefully at his Richmond home surrounded by his family on August 22. He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard George Spencer, Sr., and Vergie Ingram Spencer. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Ellen Wray Spencer; his three children, Mike, Jack, and Sarah; daughter-in-law, Mimi; son-in-law, Brian; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Dickie was born in Salem, VA, on July 16, 1935. He grew up in the Fan District of Richmond, where he formed friendships that he valued his entire life. Dickie graduated from "TJ" in 1954, where he was on the basketball team and sang in the choir. He served in the U.S. Army and had a long career at Reynolds Metals Company.
On July 30, 1960, he married Ellen Elizabeth Wray of Richmond. Through both happy and challenging times, they were fiercely devoted to each other. Dickie was known for his humility, gentleness, and sense of humor. He leaves a treasured legacy of quiet strength and goodness for his posterity.
Dickie had a soft heart for those facing challenges in life and quietly served in the community. He was a Little League baseball coach, youth basketball coach, and served on the Chesterfield County Community Services Board. Of particular importance to him was helping those who were recovering from addiction.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. on Saturday, August 30 at Bliley's – Central, 3801 Augusta Ave., Richmond. A celebration of life will be held at 2 pm.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to Special Olympics Virginia.
