Robert Rebold Obituary

Robert Alan Rebold left this life September 27, 2005. He is survived by his wife, Carol; son, Rhett; beloved grandson, Nicholas, 13.; and twin brothers, Jim and John, 80. Bob was known as the "ace mechanic", one that everyone depended upon, including his wife, who never had a repairman or "car in shop" in 49 years. He was an adoring spoiler husband, father, and grandfather. An avid pilot, utilizing flying a Luscombe Sedan in order to arrive home sooner after covering a large territory. In his retirement, he went into the antique restoration business for Cords, Auburns and Duesenbergs. With the introduction of computers, he had to have a plane again and was a member of the Quiet Birdmen. He cherished his friends from both passions and thought his life was perfect. A celebration of his life, will be held Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at the Westhampton Memorial Park, Gaskins and Patterson. Bob was a Mason. Following service, the family will receive friends at Westhampton Masonic Lodge, 9310 Three Chopt Rd.

We were very sorry to hear of Bob's passing. My father, Irving Smith, has been hospitalized and we just learned of it through Joe Guza. We knew that Bob had been ill for some time. He had been to our airstrip in Hanover many times over the years and truly enjoyed the "pilot fellowship" here and with his friends in Quiet Birdmen.

Hats off to our friend "Gone West".

I regret that I learned of Bob's passing to late to attend the funeral. Bob was a good friend and always full of fun. I always looked forwarded to talking to him at the Quiet Birdmen's meeting.

I want to express my deepest sympathy for Bob's family and friends at this time. Bob was a great guy, good friend and fellow Mason. Bob will be missed by many and his advice and counsel will no longer be available to a great number of people.

Please know that he was extremely well liked and respected by all who met him.

Please do not hesitate to ask if we, his friends and fellow Masons, can do to help.

Carol and Rhett, I am so sorry to hear about Bob. I will always remember him as being such a very nice and friendly person. He always had a smile on his face and a kind word. My heart goes out to you both and all of his family and friends. Rhett, take care of your mama. I will see you both on Sat. God bless you.

My first airplane ride was with Uncle Bob in 1963 when I was nine. He had flown down with Carol and Rhett to Atlanta to visit us, and I bugged him for three days to take me up..little did I know that he was just waiting for the weather to clear. We flew out of PDK airport and around Stone Mountain and came back and landed just as another front moved in..we got pelted with raindrops on final.

Thirty-seven years later, when I earned my pilot's license, Uncle Bob sent me congratulations by email, along with this well-known DaVinci quote:

"Once you have tasted flight,

You will forever walk the earth

with your eyes turned skyward.

For there you have been, and there

You will always long to return."

He came to visit me in the hospital. He helped me fly my first model airplane. He gave me the keys to the lake house and told me to make myself at home.

I will always remember him as a constant tinkerer, and someone who was always willing to help.

Bob (& Mr. B) were like 2nd Dad's to me, always there to lend a helping hand or fix an emergency something or another, that I had no idea about. Bob was an inventor, if he couldn't find a part for one of his cars, or piece of whatever for the house....he'd make it, and it would be pretty close to the original too! Bob lived on "The Hill" amid many friends. He was truly a terrific neighbor & now joins Mr.B to watch over me at the OBX to make sure I'm putting stuff together correctly, or as Bob would say, "that's close enuf, it'll work!"

I kept my plane at New Kent in a hangar just down from Bob's. He would always come down and see how I was doing whenver he came out and I was working. He always offered assistance and knew something helpful about everything. I went flying with him in his Cardinal a couple of times and loved it. I didn't know him well but well enough to like him and miss him in his absence.
