Ronald Hawkins Obituary

Ronald Bruce Hawkins

July 8, 1949 - May 20, 2025

Ronald 'Bruce' Hawkins, 75, of Catonsville, MD., passed away at home on Tuesday May 20, 2025. Bruce was born in Richmond, received a BA from The College of William and Mary, and earned a Master of Divinity from Duke University. He moved to Baltimore in 1977 and began a thirty-two year teaching career, helping shape young minds at Notre Dame Preparatory School, The Roland Park Country School, and Saint Paul's School.

Bruce was a talented musician and songwriter who played guitar in musical productions at Roland Park Country School and entertained students throughout his career. His knowledge and appreciation of music knew no boundaries.

Driven by a great love of adventure, music and history, he and his wife Joanne travelled frequently. In addition to many state parks in the West, they enjoyed travel to Japan and China.

His friends and colleagues will remember him for his loyalty, a wry sense of humor, and an encyclopedic knowledge of subjects ranging from theology and the history of religion to geography and the wonders of nature.

Bruce is predeceased by his mother Kathleen (Kitty) Ballew Hawkins and father R. Bayne Hawkins.

He is survived by his wife Joanne Hawkins; his sister Dr. Janet Watts (Raymond G. Keohane); nephew R. Allen Watts, III (Lindsey Watts); niece Kathleen (Kate) Virginia Watts (Nick Oxford); and great-nieces Reese and Emersyn; and his former wife Lucy Strausbaugh of Baltimore.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bruce's name to either Saint Paul's School or Roland Park Country School.

I fondly remember Bruce from our William and Mary days. He was like another brother to me and through the years, I have found him easy to talk to. His humor was wonderful and he had a genial engaging manner. He will be missed by all who were lucky enough to know him. You´re in my heart Janet.

Bruce (Ronald) and I were friends growing up members of then Montrose (Carlisle) Baptist Church. I remember Bruce, Bill Hickman and myself joining
Tom Austin,(pastor) Edna (wife) and family on vacation to Ridgecrest and the stories I could tell. Bruce and I drifted apart as we grew older but I will always remember and hold dear our early friendship. Janet, Gail and I send our Love and Sympathy to you and your family at this sad loss and know our thoughts and prayers are with you. It's been too long, Ronnie
