Ruth Tilman Obituary

Ruth Trice Tilman, 88, passed away Sunday, July 9, 2006, in the comfort of her home surrounded by her loving family. She was preceded in death by her husband, James A. Tilman III; her parents, Joseph and Lena Trice, and her brothers, Stuart, John, and Lynwood. She is survived by her son, James A. Tilman IV; her daughter, Lyn Tilman Pontius; her son-in-law, Patrick J. Pontius; three devoted grandsons, Patrick, Brian and James Pontius; and nieces and nephews. She grew up in Hadensville, Va. and was a member of Forest Grove Christian Church. After graduating from Lynchburg College in 1939, she moved across the James River to Powhatan to begin a lifelong career in education. She met and began a courtship with Jimmy Tilman; however, marriage plans were put on hold for three and a half years while Jimmy served his country during World War II in the Pacific Theater. Upon his return from the Solomon Islands, they were married on January 27, 1945. After teaching for nine years in the Powhatan schools, she served as the librarian at Midlothian High School for 25 years, and her students fondly referred to her as Mrs. T. She also taught the preschool Sunday class at May Memorial Baptist Church for 33 years. In her retirement, she dedicated her time to her family, her church, and her community. She thoroughly enjoyed and was an integral part of many organizations including the Eastern Star of Powhatan, the Powhatan Garden Club (charter member), the Richmond Council of Garden Clubs (life member), the Chesterfield Retired Teachers Association, the Virginia Education Association (honorary life member), the Powhatan Historical Society, and the Women's Club of Powhatan, where she was named Woman of the Year in 1988. One of the great pleasures of her life was immersing herself in Tilman's Antiques, Auctions, and Appraisals, where she earned the affectionate moniker of "The President". Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the May Memorial Baptist Church, Powhatan. Interment Powhatan Community Cemetery. The family wil receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Bennett and Barden Funeral Home, 3215 Anderson Highway, Powhatan. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to May Memorial Baptist Church or Powhatan Volunteer Rescue Squad.

To The Tilman Family,

My wonderful memories of "Miss Ruth" will remain with me forever.She had the most organized "Dewey Decimal System anywhere".Her guidance made me aquainted with the the future use of any system in any Library for the rest of my life. She was also My Eastern Star Sister later in life, and I will miss her terribly..Sincerely, Jo Ann Talley Spain, Past Matron, Midlothian Order of the Eastern Star # 85, and former Midlothian H.S. To our precious Mrs. Tilman;

Midlothian High School and Mrs. Tilman our Librarian are wonderful institutions that are permanently engraved in our memories! She spoiled me greatly! When I look back I realize how she gave me the confidence that my contributions were good and important...that is a most precious gift that an educator could give to a student. She always wore immaluate 'waists and skirts' with coordinating cardigans...the cutest little thing flitting about her well ordered Library. She had a way with all the students! We all loved her! The boys would tease her to death. She loved it and they loved her it was obvious! It was wonderful to have such a rich experience with our own little Mrs. Tilman. It has been my good fortune to be in her company from time to time. The last time I saw her, she was so pleased that I sought her out...it was I who was honored to be in her company!

You were a wonderful mentor Mrs. T. Thank you God for having Mrs. Tilman as threads in my tapestry of life.

God bless her family as she enriched them. My family and sisters will always fondly remember your dear, dear Mother. My heartfelt and sincere sympathy,

Susan Whitaker Gaskill.

(my family also extends their sympathy: Wesley & Alice Whitaker, daughters: Susan Whitaker Gaskill, Cynthia Whitaker Walton & Robbin Whitaker Turner.)

Mrs. Tilman was one of those teachers you will never forget. She definitely made an impression on the children she taught. I have never heard anyone who could read

"Uncle Remus" like she could. As children at Powhatan School, we could not wait to go to the library to hear Mrs. Tilman read. She was a remarkable woman who knew who she was and what she hoped she could make of you. As she leaves us for

a while, we are so much better for having known her. My heartfelt sympathy goes out to her children who loved and adored her. Blessings to you all. Ruth Boatwright
