Sarellen McAndrew Obituary

Sarellen Ann (Cawley) McAndrew

Sarellen Ann (Cawley) McAndrew, age 85, of Richmond, VA, and a former resident of Glen Burnie, MD, Pittston, PA, and Scranton, PA, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on August 19, 2025. Affectionately known as "McMother," she leaves behind a legacy of love and kindness as a wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend.

Sarellen was the wife of Andrew F. McAndrew, who passed away in 1996. Sarellen didn't want to keep Andy waiting any longer, since his death, she has been saying that she has a date waiting for her in heaven.

Surviving are three sons, Andrew (A. J.) and wife Melinda, Richmond, VA, Martin and wife Kristine, Herndon, VA, Timothy and wife Carolyn, Arlington, VA; sisters-in-law, Kathryn "Kathy" (Karam) Cawley, Scranton, and Maureen (Kerrigan) Cawley, Scranton; and brother-in-law, Lewis "Butch" Conrad, Scranton. Also surviving are grandchildren, Sean and wife Virginia, Maggie and fiancé Brandon, Miles, Luke, Rory, and Gus; great-grandchildren, Thomas and Elenora; numerous nieces and nephews; and countless other beloved family members and friends.

Sarellen was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph Gaynor Cawley and Margaret (McHale) Cawley; brothers, Patrick Cawley, J. Gaynor Cawley, and James Cawley; sister, Linda (Cawley) Conrad; and sister-in-law, Barbara (Hudak) Cawley.

Sarellen was born and raised in Scranton, PA, and she was proud of her West Scranton roots. She was a 1957 graduate of St. Patrick's High School in West Scranton. She was employed by the Pittston Sunday Dispatch, Pittston, PA, and Potomac Physicians, Baltimore, MD, for many years before retirement. Sarellen was a member of St. Benedict Catholic Church, Richmond, VA.

Sarellen's entire life was defined by her love of her Catholic faith, her family, and friends. She loved to laugh and recount fond memories of her and her siblings' childhood exploits growing up in the home above her grandfather James "Pop" McHale's pub in West Scranton. She was loved and admired by all who knew her, especially those who were lucky enough to feast on one of her home-cooked meals. She was extremely proud of her Irish heritage and was always happiest when she was among her family and friends, and when occasionally having a pint of Guinness with her sons. Sarellen will be deeply missed but always loved and fondly remembered by all whose lives she so gently touched.

A visitation will be held on Monday, August 25, from 4 to 7 p.m., at Edward J. Chomko Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 262 Railroad Avenue, Scranton. A Mass of Christian Burial will be on Tuesday, August 26, at 10 a.m., at St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Church, 1403 Jackson Street, Scranton. The family requests that those attending the Mass proceed directly to the church. Interment will follow at Cathedral Cemetery, 1708 Oram Street, Scranton.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Sarellen McAndrew's name to Suncrest Hospice, 7301 Forest Avenue, Suite 110, Richmond, VA 23226.
