William Hogate Obituary

William Sherman Hogate

October 10, 1939 - July 3, 2025

William Sherman Hogate passed away on July 3, 2025, in Henrico, Virginia. He was born on October 10, 1939, and raised in Arlington Heights, Illinois.

Bill earned both his bachelor's and master's degrees from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. It was during his time at Northwestern that he met the love of his life, Nancy, and they have been married since 1962.

Following their marriage, Bill served in the United States Air Force and was stationed with Nancy in northern Michigan for three years. After completing his military service, he embarked on a professional career that took him to various locations including Delaware, Ohio, Illinois, and New York, where he worked for several major corporations.

Later in life, Bill and Nancy pursued a shared dream by opening Pettails, a pet shop in Midlothian, Virginia. They operated the store together for 11 years before retiring. In retirement, Bill remained active by volunteering with numerous service organizations and traveling extensively with Nancy throughout the United States and abroad.

Bill will be deeply missed by his wife Nancy; his son Geoffrey (Heather) of Pittsburgh, PA; his daughter Stephanie (Rich Mallard) of Kill Devil Hills, NC; three grandchildren: Josh, Katie, and Calvin; and his sister MaryLou Sloan (Andy) of The Villages, FL.

A private graveside service will be held on August 23, 2025, at Berea Baptist Church in Rockville, Virginia. The family extends heartfelt thanks to the caring staff at Berea for their support during this difficult time.

May Bill's memory bring comfort to all who knew and loved him.
