William Stanley Obituary

STANLEY, William Astor, 78, of Richmond, passed away on January 19, 2022. He was preceeded in death by his parents, Dr. Thomas Eldridge Stanley, his mother, Madalean Mundy Stanley; and his son, William Penn Stanley. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Mary Douglas Woolford Stanley; his daughter, Elizabeth Stanley Carithers; and grandchildren, Madeleine Astor Carithers and William Hayes Carithers. He is also survived by his sister, Sigrid Stanley Jackman; and his brother, Thomas Eldridge Stanley Jr.; as well as several nieces and nephews.

A native Richmonder, Bill was the youngest of three children and the son of a country doctor, often accompanying his father on house calls while also spending time on their family farm in Montpelier. He was a member of the National Guard and began a 50 year career in real estate in 1970 with Wallace Jefferson Jones. Bill's self-built real estate career included marketing, sales and sales management for residential, new home construction and land. He was recognized by peers as a leader in the industry, helped many young agents get their start in real estate and became a mentor to many. Most recently, he was the recipient of the C. Porter Vaughn Jr. Outstanding Service Award given by the Richmond Real Estate Association.

Bill cherished time with his family and friends. He attended all of his grandchildren's swim meets, tennis matches, baseball, basketball, soccer games and school plays. He loved to share in their success and was their biggest cheerleader. He enjoyed going out to lunch and dinner with friends, many of whom were lifelong friends from childhood and were the regular recipients of Bill's hysterical cards whenever they were sick or in need. Bill loved to dance and could always be found at the center of the dance floor or up on stage, dancing with the band. He had a natural gift for rhythm and could play music by ear. He enjoyed playing his drums into his last weeks of life.

But his lasting gift to all of us was his work with the community helping those less fortunate. Bill was a selfless civil servant who devoted much of his time to helping others through his volunteer efforts. Whether it was standing out in the cold selling Christmas trees to benefit Good Samaritan Ministries, reading to children at Linwood Holton Elementary School or carrying bottled water in his car to give to the homeless at stop lights, Bill always had an intrinsic desire to help others. Bill was a long-standing member of All Saints Episcopal Church, where he spent countless hours on the Building and Grounds committee, the Vestry and was an usher with the same team for many years. Bill's faith and his love for his family, friends and the greater Richmond community will be his legacy to those he touched.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, February 9 at 11 a.m. at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 6000 Grove Avenue, Richmond, Va. 23226, with a private burial to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Good Samaritan Ministries, 2307 Hull Street, Richmond, Va. 23224; or to St. Stephen's Episcopal Church. Masks are required at the service, which will also be livestreamed at www.ststephensrva.org/memorialstream.

Mary Douglas, dear - A Christmas without Billy will be extremely trying, I know. His effervescent personality and humor, and just the sweetness of him are with you and all around you. He was such a good, good man, and he loved YOU so much.

As Christmas approaches, I take time each year to remember friends who are no longer with us. This year, there is a new set of memories and they involve Billy. We met at Mary Munford in second grade and remained friends for life. We double-dated together in high school. When I tried out for the basketball team at Albert Hill, I was the last person cut....and Billy took that spot. I was happy for him. No one could make me, or all of us, laugh like Billy. He was one of the shining stars of TJ´s class of 1962, even though he finished at the Bullis School. He was one in a million.
Now he is entertaining the angels in heaven and I can almost hear their laughter. Merry Christmas, my good friend, for you are mightily missed here!

I first met Billy in the second grade at Mary Munford school and followed him to Albert Hill and Thomas Jefferson. We stayed in touch throughout our lives. He and some others from Tee Jay came out to South Bend for a Notre Dame football game one fall.
Billy was a once-in-a-lifetime person. He liked everyone and kept us laughing continuously. He remains a truly beloved member of TJHS. RIP, Billy!

Bill and I shared an office for 10 years. He was always an encourager to rookie and seasoned Realtors. His kind and spirited presence here is missed. Peace to all his family.

I am so sorry I couldn't be at Bill's service. But I watched it on line and it was beautiful. The priest knew Bill well. He will be missed by many. He was a special friend. Thinking about you. Love Linda

Warm thoughts to all your family. Bill was a caring gentle giant in the real estate world! It was an honor to learn from him, and share an office with him. He cared for all and awakened us to share our gifts and talents with others.

Mary Douglas,
My heart breaks with this news. To me, Billy was the personification of a true Southern gentleman. He was always kind, gracious and funny on the occasions I had to visit with him.
Sending you love and prayers during this difficult time.

Another angel has flown; he is with Will now, so there is some consolation in that. However, he was such a loving and hysterical family man; his abiding love for my dear friend and cousin, Mary Douglas and having been in their wedding more than fifty years ago made me love him from long, long ago. Thank you, Billy for making your family so very, very happy, and all who knew you too.

Only good memories follow you.

Sorry to learn of Bill's passing. I did not know Bill but his father Dr. T.E. brought me into the world. With this connection it just makes me feel like Bill too was a wonderful person. Just recently scanning through older memos I read the letter Dr. Stanley mailed to his patients announcing his leaving Montpelier think it was 1946. God-Bless the Stanley family with their loss of Bill.

Mary Douglas, I am so shocked and saddened by the news of Bill's passing. He was certainly a one-of-a-kind man. I learned so much from him, and he always kept in touch with me over all these years. "Kimmie Poo" he'd call me.. "bip bop boo" All my love to you and your family. He sure will be missed

What an amazing man! As a Realtor since 1973, I spent many classes and Realtor events with Bill, and yes, he was the centerpiece! Jesus just got Himself, one great man!

Mary Douglas; I am so sorry to hear of Bills passing. Bill was a good friend and a great mentor to me. Bill was a force behind the establishment of my graphic design business. I will forever be indebted to him for his caring and for his help to me. I will miss him and his quick wit.
