George Neborak Obituary

George Neborak, beloved husband of Charlotte (nee Schraishuhn), passed away on May 14, 2023 in Alexandria, VA. Born on June 20, 1928 in Philadelphia, PA, he was the youngest of the late Michael and Susan (Ducar) Neborak's seven children. He was a graduate of Southern High School where his interest in math and engineering led to studies at Syracuse University and a career in computers and technology, beginning at IBM in the 1950's. He served in the Army Signal Corp during the Korean War. Prior to moving to Virginia, he lived in Lafayette Hill, PA for more than 50 years. Active in his community, he was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Whitemarsh Lions Club and the Barren Hill Fire Company. He supported his children's activities as the treasurer of the PW Marching Colonials parent group, girls' softball team coach, swim team timer and scorekeeper. In his spare time, he liked to tinker with radios, electronics, and automobile engines – believing that he could fix them or use a part for something else. And indeed, he usually could. He loved exploring diverse cultures and food, so he organized family car trips to nearly all fifty states and eastern Canada as well as journeys abroad to Asia, South America, and Europe. In between, he spent many summers with the family at the Jersey shore. After he retired, his passion became genealogical research. Through extensive study at the National Archives, online databases, and countless trips to Slovakia, he not only discovered his parent's Rusyn heritage, but he met many new-found relatives. For more than three decades, he continued to seek information and was active with Rusyn organizations. He would be especially thrilled to know that there will be a holy mass in his honor at the church of St. Basil the Great in Krajné Cierno, Slovakia – his mother's church – a place that was dear to him and he visited many times. Outside of work, George was a sports enthusiast and especially enjoyed the Phillies–Mets and Phillies–Nationals rivalries that he shared with his grandchildren.
George and Charlotte met at dance night at Chez Vous in Upper Darby, PA and his love of dancing extended throughout their 66 years of marriage. If music was playing, George could be found on the dance floor – jitterbug, waltz, polka, mummer's strut – he danced them all and with everyone, gleefully. In addition to his wife Charlotte, he is survived by his children Susan Knox (Michael) of Marco Island, FL; Robert Neborak (Thérèse) of New York City, Joanne Burd (Russ) of Arlington, VA and grandchildren Douglas and Connor Knox, Serge Neborak, and Emma and Andrew Burd along with many nieces and nephews. We will mourn his loss, cherish his memory, and hold him close forever. A memorial service will be held at a later date. In his memory, a donation can be made to the Whitemarsh Lions Club or Barren Hill Fire Company, Lafayette Hill, PA.

Dear Neborak Family
We just saw your father's obituary in the Times Herald and were very sorry to read of his passing. We hope your mother is well. A couple of Christmas's ago Charlotte and George sent us a picture of the two of them and the three of you. It was so nice. We remember him from St. Peter's. We had many good times. He was a very nice person and we will think of him often. We hope all of the family is well. How time flies but we're all getting older and time passes so quickly. Say hello to Charlotte and may all of you stay well. Joe and Betty Barnes

I am reaching out to Susan Neborak. Did you attend Spring Mill Elementary School? I had a lovely girl by that name in my class. My sympathy goes to you and your family.
