Lee Syracuse Obituary

March 2, 1931 - Dec. 9, 2014

Lee A. Syracuse, 83, of Benicia passed away Tuesday at his home following a long illness. He was born in New Haven, Connecticut and has been a Benicia resident for more than 42 years. Lee was a graduate of the University of Connecticut and earned his Masters from Yale University.

Lee worked for the City of Benicia as City Planner for more than 15 years. He was involved with the planning and development of Southampton and the Southampton Shopping Center, Benicia Marina and the condominium complex nearby. He was instrumental in the planning of the Torchlight Parade, held on the third of July for more than 35 years. He was always trying to make Benicia a better place to live and where families wanted to lay roots. He helped in the effort to have trees planted on First Street and the sidewalks redone. Lee was a true Benician, not by birth but in his contributions to the community he loved for the betterment of generations to come. His warm smile and upbeat personality will long be remembered by all who knew him. He spent many years restoring his waterfront Victorian house in Benicia with it's magnificent view of the Carquinez Bridge and surrounding area.

Lee was a longtime parishioner of St. Dominic's Church and a devout Catholic.

Lee is survived by his brother, Dr. Joseph T. (Marie) Siracuse DMD; sister Roberta (Robert) Eldridge; nieces and nephews Joseph, Walter, Sandy and Donna and their families, and by Al Gomes, his longtime friend, companion and caregiver. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph W. and Marie M. Siracuse.

Vigil services will be held 7 p.m., Monday at Passalacqua Funeral Chapel. Mass of Christian burial will be held 11 a.m., Tuesday at St. Dominic's Church. Following cremation, his ashes will be buried in his native Connecticut. Visitation will be at the mortuary after 2 p.m., Monday. Family prefers donations to Doctors without Borders.
