Carl Boyd Obituary

KINGSTON — Carl Remington Boyd Jr., 88, of Kingston, passed away peacefully Monday, May 6, 2024, in Geisinger Hospital, surrounded by and embraced by loved ones.

He was born Feb. 2, 1936, son to the late Carl Remington Boyd Sr., and Margaret Williams Boyd. He spent most of his life in Kingston where he started his own machine and wood shop, West Side Machine and Tool, that would expand over the years, and still continues to do work to this day as West Side Tool and Die, run by his son, Christopher James Boyd.

A true Renaissance man, he'd go on to develop skills in physical training and health, and the arts. He made friends easily and often, and was well respected, admired, and loved amongst his peers. A master machinist, carpenter, architect, and musician of many strings, Carl also bought several properties over the years for passive income to do more things. Always more, always something; he was always thinking of and planning his next venture. Investing in everything from machinery, carpentry and houses, to art, antiques and people. A savvy businessman, he was always looking for and finding the best deals.

His wit was unmatched, as were his skills in playing pool, of which he'd won several championships and contests. An avid weight lifter up to his final days, he also invented several devices to enhance his exercises. Almost every room at the family home had a bookshelf full of a great variety of books; most of them buckled and read.

He loved poetry, and in 1956 he married his lifelong love, Roberta Walter Boyd. In the '70s he'd create The Nomads with Carl on lead guitar and backup vocals, and his wife Roberta on bass and vocals. They'd play for some 10 years all up and down the bars, pubs and stages of the Valley.

He was well liked by everyone, and loved dearly by all of his kin. His style and dance were always ahead of the times. The best and only father that many of us ever knew, already we miss his eyes of bombadier blue. He wanted to live to 120 years, and through everyone who loved him, in our hearts he'll go on through the years.

Surviving are his children: Cheryl Lawson, Robert Boyd, Donna Boyd, Christopher Boyd and Jeremy Boyd; grandchildren: Amber, Candida and Lolita Lawson; Remington and Katie Boyd; as well as seven plus great-grandchildren.

Family and friends are invited to a viewing, which will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday. Services will occur from 6 to 7 p.m. at Hugh B. Hughes & Son Inc. Funeral Home, 1044 Wyoming Ave., Forty Fort.
