NANTICOKE — Narcey Zmijewski Sr., 86, of Nanticoke, loving husband and father, passed away Friday morning, Nov. 10, 2017, at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.
Born and raised in Glen Lyon, Narcey was a son of the late Alexander and Genevieve Machinski Zmijewski. He graduated from the former Newport Township High School in 1950 and served his country with the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War with the 512th Bombardment Squadron and attained the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was awarded the Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal.
He married the former Shirley Hummel on Jan. 31, 1953, and together they resided in Honey Pot and raised their three sons.
Narcey was employed by Acme Markets, at the Dundee, Shavertown, Nanticoke and Mountain Top locations, retiring from management after 37 years of service.
He was an active member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Nanticoke, where he had served on the church council. He belonged to American Legion Post 350 of Nanticoke, and he had been active with his sons in Little League baseball, coaching for both Honey Pot and the American Legion teams. He also coached Sunday School basketball for St. John's in the past. Narcey enjoyed Penn State football and was an avid fan of the Philadelphia Phillies.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Henry and Edward, and sisters Frances, Bertha, Julia, Mamie and Alberta.
Surviving are his loving wife, Shirley, with whom he shared 64 wonderful years of marriage; his sons, Narcey Zmijewski Jr. and wife, Kathy, of Allentown, Robert Zmijewski and Dale Zmijewski, both of Nanticoke; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will begin 10 a.m. Monday from Davis-Dinelli Funeral Home, 170 E. Broad St., Nanticoke, with Divine service at 10:30 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church, 231 State St., Nanticoke, with the Rev. Debra North, his pastor, officiating, and the Rev. Charles Grube assisting.
Interment will follow at the family plot in Hanover Green Cemetery, Hanover Township, with military honors.
Viewing and visitation hours will be 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Jon Olenginski, Nurse Jen, Dr. Pat Kilduff, Dr. Peter Andrews, John Rosencrans CRNP, and all the fine nurses, therapists and caregivers who cared for Narcey in his final years.
If desired, contributions in Mr. Zmijewski's memory may be made to St. John's Lutheran Church, 231 State St., Nanticoke, PA 18634. The family requests floral tributes be omitted.
