Larry Thompson Obituary

Larry Thompson

Munday, TX

Larry Gene Thompson, affectionately known as "Pops", was born January 28, 1947 to Gene and the late Emogene Thompson of Munday. Pops peacefully went home to Jesus October 21, 2018 in Knox County Hospital surrounded by his family and friends.

Larry is a lifetime resident of Munday with the exception of four years at Texas Tech where he met the love of his life, Cindy Zesch of Mason, on the steps of the Tech library. They married July 15, 1966. After they graduated from Texas Tech they moved to Munday to farm and ranch and raise their three boys.

Larry never met a stranger. He loved people and enjoyed meeting people from all over at stockshows, team ropings, sporting events and all his grandchildren's events. He was a founder of Believer's Chapel and served as an elder from the beginning and taught Sunday School for forty plus years He also served on Munday ISD school board, Knox County Appraisal Board, WRCA Crisis Foundation along with other organizations through the years.

Pops loved seeing cattle, horses, green grass, and full tanks while getting stuck in the mud just about every time it rained! He loved his family and traveled many miles watching his boys and his grands doing what they loved. Pops is leaving a legacy of faith for his family and all who knew him.

He is survived by his loving wife, Cindy ("Cinny"), and his three sons and their wives: Todd and Kelly, Trey and Ronda, Tyler and Tonya all of Munday, as well as his "grands": Chace and his wife Collyn, Tori and her fiance Clay Hopkins, Tyson, Kreece, Taylor, Sydney, Cheney, Kendall, Madison, Brice, and Trevor. Other survivors include his dad, Gene, his sister, Paula Cowsert and her husband Jim, all of Munday as well as his brother-in-law, Gary Zesch and his wife Carole of Mason. Pops has many special nieces and nephews who will miss him as well.

Visitation will be Tuesday, October 23rd at 6 pm at Believer's Chapel in Munday. A memorial service will be Wednesday, October 24th at 10:30 am at the First Baptist Church in Munday, under the direction of McCauley-Smith Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to the WRCA Crisis Fund, 408 SW 7th Ave, Amarillo, TX 79101 or the Believer's Chapel Building Fund, PO Box 348, Munday, TX 76371.

Cindy and Family, you continue to be in my prayers. You are not alone in your grief. We survive by grace, gratitude and grit.

Cindy and family,
I was so sad to hear of Larry's death. The last time I saw Larry was a few years ago at the Zesch reunion at Grossville. I thought the world of Larry.
I always enjoyed following your boys in their athletic endeavors and cowboying. Now we have another tragic death of Joshua. Just to let you know, I have been thinking of you during this time. May you find comfort in God's Love.

Gay and I have always loved and appreciated Larry and Cindy very much. So sorry to hear of Larry's home-going. I know he will be missed by you all, but his greatest triumph has been realized. We will never forget how you welcomed us to Munday, loved and prayed for us as we served as pastor of FBC, and we raised our sons together. Larry was a man of God! Our love and prayers are with you.

MY SINCERE CONDOLENCES TO CINDY AND THE FAMILY!!

I just read about Larry's passing this morning on facebook. I met Larry in the early 90's when I began team roping, and I can honestly say that he went out of his way to make a beginner feel welcome to the team roping fraternity. We roped together many times at the Coors ropings in Abilene after that, and although I wasn't much of a heeler, he would always rope with me. My dad always told me that you can always tell about a mans character by the way he treats people who have nothing to offer him but friendship, and that was all I had to offer Larry for sure. He had a big bald face horse, and always had a kind word to say. I have a few cows in Knox City now, and I pass through Munday often, and wondered about him everytime I passed through there, and hoped I would run into him sometime. I passed through there last Sunday, and saw Todd I believe, downtown, and figured it was a parade, or homecoming event. I would like to offer my condolences to the family, and hope the memories bring comfort to all.

Cindy and Family, Like countless others, Joe and I thought the world of Larry, and were honored to call him our friend. We first met him at a team roping in Menard, TX, in the 1980's, and enjoyed many more visits with him at many more ropings. I have no doubt Joe met him at the gates of heaven, Friends together again, riding and roping. Know that you and your family are in my prayers, now, and in the long days ahead. We never know how strong we are until we have no other choice. Stay strong.

Larry was my good friend for 54 years. We played football against each other when Knox City and Munday met on the field. We competed at the same rodeos while we were in high school. Larry and I roped together when we were at the same ropings. Sherri and I were friends with Larry and Cindy at Texas Tech and through the rest of our lives. We had great times with Larry and Cindy. Larry enjoyed life and was always our friend. He enjoyed a rich life with his his parents his wife his sister and his boys. We knew them all. They provided Larry his wonderful heritage and his abundant life. We all lost a good one when Larry left us. I bet he gets rain often in heaven.
