Harry Huff Obituary

Harry Albert Huff
92, of Bowerston, Ohio, passed away Wednesday, Dec.1, 2010 at Sunnyslope Nursing Home in Bowerston following a period of declining health. He was born at the family farm on Willis Run Road near Bowerston on Nov. 2, 1918, a son of the late Orva Clyde and Verna Mae (McPheters) Huff. He married the former Luella Mae Bower on Oct. 12, 1940, and they were inseparable for the next 64+ years before her sudden death on April 14, 2005. Harry never totally rebounded after losing the love of his life.
Survivors include his daughter, Margaret I. "Peggy" (Frank Davis) Huff of Bowerston; brother, Curtis Eugene Huff of Louisville, Ohio; many treasured nieces and nephews and their families; and a brother- and sister-in-law, Ernest and Lottie Bower of Cleveland. In addition to his wife, Harry was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Donald (an infant), Charles, and Edward (Mabel) Huff; sisters, Gladys (Raymond) Duram and Gertrude (Donald) Sagerman; sister-in-law, Jane Huff; brothers-in-law, Neil (Dolores) Bower, James (Leona) Bower, and Lloyd Bower; and father- and mother-in-law, Dennis and Maude Bower. The family moved from the farm to the village of Tappan for a period of time where Harry and his father worked on the construction of Tappan Dam. He later worked for the railroad in Mingo Junction, Ohio, leaving there to work for the Bowerston Shale Company. A truly loyal "company man," Harry retired from Bowerston Shale after 53 years of service. Harry and Luella lived their entire married life in Bowerston, except for a short period of time in Mingo Junction, and were both very active in their church and community. Harry served as village councilman for many years, was a charter member of the Bowerston Volunteer Fire Department, and held many offices in the church. He and Luella were also the motivating force behind the restoration of the chapel building at Longview Cemetery and elicited the help of many willing volunteers. They were both always ready to help when and where needed. The only thing above Harry's devotion to his job was his love and devotion to his family. To find him at any gathering, all you had to do was look for the circle of kids and you'd find "Uncle Harry" in the middle. He was quite a teaser and jokester, and the little ones always gravitated to him. He loved it. There will always be a hole in our hearts that can't be healed.
Services for Harry, officiated by Rev. Bob James, will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 6, in the R.K. Lindsey Funeral Home at Dennison. Interment will follow in Bowerston's Longview Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to call at the funeral home from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. Those wishing to honor Harry's memory by a charitable contribution are encouraged to do so to the charity of their choice.

Peggy,

We are so sorry to hear of your loss.

I have such fond memories of Harry, and Himi had great stories of their work together at BOSCO. Even our old car loved Harry so much it decided to come down the street and visit your house on its own.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Peggy:

Our family was so sorry to hear of your loss. We only found out today and apologize for a late expression of sympathy. We will make a donation in your father's name to the Memorial Dedication sponsored by the Hospice of Tuscarawas County. They were pivotal in the care of Uncle Ray and Aunt Margaret until their passing last year. I'm sure that you know "Aloysius" was the favorite of the entire Shultz family. Our father thought the sun rose and set in his best buddy. We share your sorrow and loss.

With sincere sympathy,
The Herman Shultz family

I loved the part of the obit that mentioned Harry's love of children. My brother and I adored Harry! We grew up across the street from Harry and Luella. I have vivid memories of them throughout my childhood. Harry called my mom Windy and when I came along, he called me Breezy :) I don't recall him ever calling me by my given name. What wonderful neighbors and wonderful memories.

Peggy and Frank,
Our hearts and prayers go out to you. Uncle Harry will be greatly missed. He was a wonderful, fun loving, caring person who was admired by all. His love for his family shone bright. May the memories you hold dear to your heart bring you comfort, may God be with you during this difficult time, and may his love surround you and bring peace to your heart. With our Deepest Sympathy, Pete, Judy, Tiff and Sami

Jim and I give you our sincerest sympathy. I remember your dad working at the Shale Company. He was always one of my dad's favorites (my dad worked there for years, too). I think they both had the same type of humor. I always remember my dad talking about "Huffy."
