In My Pocket

I have memories in my pocket.
They rattle among the change.

My memories of you are treasures I carry wherever I go.

They are stored in bits and pieces, parts of a beautiful whole
They give me comfort when I think I am alone.

Yes, I have memories in my pocket, like so much other stuff I keep there.

But of all the treasures I have, it’s the memories of you that are the most precious.

1977 - as a freshman at AHS, my dad "encouraged" me to become equipment manager for the varsity football team - my first day a bunch of the players (my brother included) were picking on me before practice, when one of the assistant coaches broke up their fun and games and made them all run extra laps before practice - that man was Charlie Leigh, and I didn't need an introduction, since I was and still am a diehard Dolphin fan. I didn't know how to thank him, and kept calling him "Mr Leigh" so much that he took me aside and told me "when no one else can hear, you call me Charlie". We spent most of that season tossing the ball around during practice, which for me is still one of my favorite memories of high school. A great man and surely missed by all who loved him - keep him in your hearts and his memory will always shine bright

My deepest condolences to the family of "Tink" was a son of Arbor Hill ..to the bone! No matter where you've been or what you went thru he never judged you and treated you the same. I recall the good old days when we all used to hang out on Swan Street and watch him and other guys play pool. He was a very generous human being and I hope that, as he is resting in peace that his family will also find the same. He will be deeply missed. God bless you ALL...Linda Moore AKA "BONES"

As a member of the Albany High J.V. during Charlies reign as King of Football[at least to me]I was lucky enough tobe kicked up to Varsity for the last few games of Charlies final season.I almost tackled him once in a scrimmage but like most defenders was only succesful in slowing him down a little. He was a man among boys a joy to know and a thrill to watch.God Bless you Charlie rest in peace.

Marie & the Leigh Family
I've been trying to write this message to you since I heard about Tinky's passing. First, I want to express my heartfelt sympathy & sorrow for your loss. I too was one of those kids in Arbor Hill on Swan St. I had to write this because I have a story to tell that you all may or may not know about.
Several years ago, I along with some of the other kids in the neighborhood was at Lincoln Park.
Being young and naive, I allowed some of them to talk me into letting them take me out into the deeper part of the pool. After geing out there, I began to panick, grapping onto all those around or near me because I knew I was going to drown. The people I was with fearing for their own lives were going to let me go under which I did several times. Tinky somehow saw what was going on and came to my rescue. To this day, I remember Tinky saving my life. Tinky will forever be my Superman and hero and he will be sorely missed. To know him was to love him because of the kind of person he was. I will never forget him and the beautiful and genuine smile he always had when he saw you no matter how long it might have been since the last time he saw you. Love Ya, Peggy (Johnakin) Hall

To, Uncle Tinky The Day I left for New Jersey is the Day you left us.I guess God knew what I could handle. Say Hello to my Boy if you see him tell him I love him and miss him. I'm gonna miss you when I go to the house and your not there.Even though you were soft spoken, you always made me speak up especailly when I tried to act shy and you new me since I was little and sneaky and getting into trouble. While I was in New Jersey working at the craft show this is what I do. I met a man who had been painting Football pictures of different teams. I asked him where are the Miami Dolphins at he said I don't have them he said not with him, he said they wee at home I said oh, you must have my Uncle in it he said what year I said 1972. He said no, I was mad I said well My Uncle was a Legend then you don't have nothing, and I walked away. He made me mad, To My Aunt Marie and Cousins, Sherrell, Charlie and Carla, Deveren I love you all very much, because you have always showed me nothing but love. My Uncle was always so soft spoken but I always felt love around all of you, and you can rest a sure
that Uncle Tinky is resting in
peace and I just want you to know that I'm always thinking and praying for you. You all were there for me when I needed you and I will be forever greatful to you. Aunt Burnie, if you ever need anything just call me. You know if I have transportation I'll be there. And Sherrell, Carla, and Charlie, and Deveren I'm just a phone call away. You are my cousins but more like Big Sisters and Brothers to me. You all have so much strenghth, my Uncle Tinky was a true Champion and on that Day his family showed Courage, Strenghth, and most of all you stood together as a team and held each other together, so his job was done, and his family can know that he would be proud of how they handled themselves. I love you, Haneefa

To the Leigh Family,

I am so sorry about the loss of Tinky. I went to Albany High School with him and remember cheering on the team as he led us to victory. He was a very nice young man in school. After graduation, I never followed sports so was unaware of his successful football career. I found out about his death the evening of his service at the Palace theatre. Had I known about it before hand, you can be sure I would have been there to honor who I knew as a kind, gentle young high school football hero and who evidently became a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and a very community minded adult. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

To the Family of Charlie Leigh,

We would like to extend our heartfelt sympathies to you for the lost of your husband, father, grandfather, uncle, cousin and close friend.

I am sorry I am writing this at this time, but my sister from Albany just informed me of Charlie death.

My husband and I didn't know Charlie personally, but we went to the same school as he did. In fact I graduated with him from Albany High in 1965. We do remember how great of a football player he was and how he and the tema brought us to the championship against CBA and we won!!!!

We know what you are going through at this time, because we lost our son a year this month in Iraq. We understand how you feel and how deep the pain is.

Please be comforted in knowing that we will keep all of you in our prayers and with the Lords help, he will get you through this.

I know life will never be the same, but we all have memories to get by on.

With our deepest sympathy,

Dear Leigh Family:
Although we do not know each other, I wanted to share this with you. Myself, my sister, my son and niece met Mr. Leigh this summer at Saratoga Race tracks NFL day. My son(age7)and niece(age8) stood for hours waiting to have their footballs signed, only to have the line cut in front of us. They walked sadly by the NFL players to the end where Mr. Leigh was, he noticed them and allowed them to come under the rope and signed their footballs. He reckonized my sons pop warner Cannoneer jersey as local and told him Watervliet grows them big and he had great stature for a football player to keep doing his best and gave a sweet kiss to my niece. His display of kindness and sparkle in his eye definately showed what a wonderful man he was. Please accept our sympathies.

Charlie will be remembered by us with great fondness. May the Leigh family find strength in the warm, wonderful memories they have of the time that Charlie graced their lives.

May God Bless.

To Mrs. Leigh, Charlie,Sherell, Carla.
I send my sympathy, love and prayers to you all. It has been years since we've seen each other. However, I have nothing but good memories of us all growing up in Mt. Olive and singing in the choir (Reach Beyond the Break). Mr. Charlie (Sr.) was always a "cool, down to earth" man.
I pray that God grants you the peace that only He can give (Philippians 4). Only God can get you through the days ahead. After losing my father, Deacon Franklin, I KNOW that ONLY God can walk you through the grief. When the visiting and the phone calls slows down, it will be GOD standing there, ready to comfort you.
I am honored to have known Mr. Charlie.
Continue to look to the hills from whence cometh your help. Your help comes from the Lord. God bless and much love to you all.
Rhonda

Marie and Family,
It is hard to put into words the loss of a classmate, teammate and good friend, but God has a way of washing away our tears and healing our pain that we can't explain. Knowing that he loves us and will comfort us in our time of need, and brings us a joy that no man can bring.May God bless and continue to comfort you.

As-Salaam Aliakum,
May the peace and blessings of Almighty God ALLAH be with the Leigh Family. We played football and basketball against each other(Albany High vs Philip Schuyler) some classic match-ups, Tinky is one of the best. He used to stop by my job in Schenectady to shop and chat a little about the old days. May Brother Charles rest in the peace that God brings.

We were just a bunch of kids running around in the Livingston Avenue Boy’s Club back in the 1960's. We would go to the Albany High games at Bleeker Stadium and watch his awesome running style. Later at the Boy’s Club, my brother Peter(A Miami Fan) and I (along with the rest of the club members) watched with great pride as our boy Tinky worked his magic ON TELEVISION playing in the NFL! Crowded in the club’s tv room we were so proud! A few years back, I spotted Raymond(Duggan) and Charles(wearing his Miami jacket of course!) walking through Crossgates mall. I pulled up behind them and said “Isn’t that Tinky Leigh of the 17 and 0 Miami Dolphins” They turned around wondering who could have spotted them! We had a nice chat. A great and humble man and an inspiration to us all. With great sadness our brother has passed into the hands of the Lord. May he breathe in eternity the sweet air of God’s paradise. My deepest sympathies to all of his family and loved ones. God bless! I will never forget him.

Frank and Peter DeNuicci.
