Daniel Herzog Obituary

Herzog, The Right Rev. Daniel W.
SAUQUOIT - Bishop Daniel W. Herzog, age 82 of Sauquoit, formerly of Ogdensburg, N.Y., passed away on Friday, August 4, 2023, at his home.
Bishop Dan was born on July 9, 1941, in Ogdensburg, the son of William and Mary (Martin) Herzog. Dan graduated from St. Mary's Academy in 1959. After earning degrees from St. Bonaventure and St. Lawrence University, Bishop Dan served as the personnel director of the St. Lawrence Psychiatric Center from 1967 to 1995.
During his employment at the SLPC, Bishop Dan was ordained as both a deacon and priest in 1971. As a worker priest, he served at St. John's Episcopal Church in Ogdensburg from 1971 to 1976 and at Christ Church in Morristown from 1976 to 1995. After retirement from the SLPC in 1995, Bishop Dan moved to the Capital District and served as the rector of Christ Church in Schenectady from 1995 to 1997. In 1997, Bishop Dan was elected the eighth Bishop of the Albany Episcopal Diocese on the first ballot. Bishop Dan retired from the Diocese in 2007. In retirement, he assisted in both overseeing parish revitalizations and directing the healing center at Christ the King Center. He then became the priest-in-charge at St. Augustine's Episcopal Church in Ilion, serving there for about five years. Most recently, Bishop Dan ministered at the New Church Plant, Christ the King Anglican Mission in Utica.
Surviving family members include his wife, Carol; his daughter, Mary (Herzog) Spanneut; his three sons, William, Michael, and Dr. John Herzog; and several grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents, and his son, Justin.
Bishop Dan's funeral Mass will be held at 12 p.m. on Thursday, August 17, at the Christ the King Center, 575 Burton Rd., Greenwich.
Bishop Dan's service arrangements and supervision are entrusted to his friend, Don Applegate, funeral director at Applegate-Day & Enea Family Funeral Home's original location at 102 West St., Ilion, N.Y. I first met Bishop Dan in December of 2000. He invited me to share my vision for a prayer and healing center in the West Hill neighborhood of Albany. Despite never meeting me before he recognized God's calling and provided housing for my family in the rectory at Grace and Holy innocents Church. Without his assistance I would not have been able to establish Koinonia Primary Care and serve the poor in the most desperate neighborhoods in Albany. 23 years later his legacy lives on as Koinonia Primary Care continues to be a beacon of hope in West Hill and to the city of Albany.
I am forever indebted to this great man of God, as is the city that we both loved. I will grieve his loss which will only strengthen my resolve to continue to provide care for the poor in the name of Jesus. I pray for comfort for all those who loved him.

Grieving the loss of Bishop Dan. He enlisted me to serve in various roles in the Episcopal Diocese of Albany. He visited me at home prior to my first cancer surgery. I learned a lot about the Church and our faith from him. He was a unique personality, very intelligent and very human. I loved him.
