David Hayner Obituary

Hayner, David Z.
SHARON SPRINGS - David Hayner, a resident of Sharon Springs since 1965, died at his residence on Sunday, July 21, 2024, after a long illness. He was 84.
Born in Troy, New York on October 1, 1939, he was the son of the late Allen and Jennie (Akin) Hayner.
David was a 1957 graduate of Lansingburgh High School and a 1959 graduate of SUNY Cobleskill. He served four years in the United States Marine Corps from 1960 to 1964. During this time, he worked with helicopters on the USS Boxer during the Cuban missile crisis.
After the military, David and his wife Marjorie (Hartnagle) moved to Sharon Springs where he worked as a salesman at Harold Dingman's John Deere dealership. In 1972, he and his brother, Allen, opened Hayner Bros, Inc. in Cherry Valley, N.Y. selling International Harvester farm equipment and later Kubota. He hosted bus trips for local farmers to the Pennsylvania Farm Show for years. Later in his career, he drove for Riteway/Hesco/AER delivering Ford remanufactured parts. In his retirement, age 72, he continued to drive for his son-in-law's farm and the Tri-Valley Crop Center.
He always loved travel (sometimes hitchhiking), auto racing and whatever else fit his rebellious nature.
He drove his family everywhere, including a trip in a truck camper through Mexico. At the time of retirement, he got a motorcycle license and rode cross country multiple times visiting friends and family.
David was a longtime member of the St. Matthew's Lutheran Chapel in Leesville and served as a member of the church council. When St. Matthews closed, he became a congregant of St. John's Lutheran Church in Frey's Bush.
Survivors include three daughters, Suzanne (David) Graulich of Cobleskill, Tara (Shane) Barton of Schoharie, and Krista Lyons (Ralph Garcia) of Coral Gables, Fla.; a son, David Hayner of Sharon Springs; and seven grandchildren, Lara, Allen and Karl Graulich; Mitchell, Mackenzie and Quin Barton, and Keelin Lyons. He loved hosting exchange students and considered Laura, Pili, Montse and Petra family.
He was predeceased by his wife, Marjorie, in March 2013; and five siblings; Douglas, Lloyd, Elsie, Eyre, and Allen Jr.
Friends and family are invited to attend a graveside service at 11:00 a.m., Friday, July 26, at Memory Gardens Cemetery, 893 Watervliet Shaker Road, Albany. Later, calling hours will be in Sharon Springs at Lappeus Funeral Home from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, July 26, followed by a memorial service (7:00 p.m.).
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Marathon for a Better Life, POB 268, Warnerville, N.Y. 12187, or to St. John's Lutheran Church, 774 State Route 163, Fort Plain, N.Y. 13339.

The Norman Hayner family would like to send all our love and prayers for comfort and peace during this time.
We remember with great fondness the David stories and visits throughout the years and cherish that crooked mischievous smile with a twinkle in his eye. No matter what the circumstance, it was clearly evident that he loved his family and friends. We are ever so grateful he and his son would be willing to take care of dad´s John Deere that HE sold dad many years ago. It lifted my mom´s own heart to know it was in good hands! Grateful for the stories, friendship, family connections for these many decades. May God´s peace envelop you richly.

We were saddened to hear about Dave. He and Marge were long time friends for both of us. Will miss long conversations with Dave on a variety of subjects. He was friends with my brother Don Smith who passed away earlier this year. One memory is that Dave would drive his tractor from Bald Mtn to Speigletown to plow our driveway of snow in the winter. A great loss for us.
