Grego, John COHOES John Joseph Grego, age 84 of Cohoes, N.Y. passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on February 23, 2018 after a short illness at Memorial Hospital in Albany. Born in Cohoes, N.Y. on March 12, 1933, he was the son of the late Rose and Anthony Grego of Cohoes, N.Y. He graduated from Cohoes High School in 1951 and then Mohawk Valley Community College. He pursued a career as a GE employee before being drafted into the US Army, serving in the United States and Germany. When returning from the Army, he began his work as a television repairman maintaining his successful business into 2018 at the age of 84. John was active in St. Rita's Catholic Church in Cohoes, N.Y. for many years donating a significant amount of time. He loved living in Cohoes and was born at home and spent his next 84 years in the city he adored. He loved Cohoes politics and was an active member of the Neighborhood Watch Program to help make Cohoes a safer place. He was a proud and founding member of the Cohoes Men's Association, supporting sports and education in the Cohoes School District since 1963. He was an involved father including coaching various teams including the Championship Cohoes Mastadons in the 1980's. He will be remembered for his tremendous optimism in all situations and unwavering commitment to family. John was predeceased by his sister Catherine (Coonradt) and his wife of 52 years Marge, who he simply adored and has rejoined in eternal peace. He was survived by his son's, Anthony J Grego (Milli Grego), John D. Grego (Laurie Grego); daughter, Maria C. Grego DeCore (Patrick DeCore); sister, Antoinette Feeley; grandchildren, Adam Grego, Patrick DeCore, Shinara DeCore, Laurene Burton and Jamie Burton. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at St. Michael's Church Cohoes. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery Waterford. Calling hours are Monday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Marra Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations to the Cohoes High School Men's Association in support of a scholarship for a Cohoes High School student that will be presented in John's name in June of 2018. Checks should be sent to his son, John Grego, at 1 Lancashire Court, Clifton Park, NY 12065 with memo noting the donation is for the Cohoes High School Men's Association.

Oh, I was so sadden to read this article about Johnny. John, my twin sister and I were friends since elementary school on Main Street. One of the last times we were up in Cohoes visiting, we stopped into the shop to say "hello!". It was great to see him. So glad now that we took that time to see him. He was such a wonderful person and it is reasonable that he will be missed greatly. He did so much for Cohoes and the entire community will miss him as well. A nice tribute to him and well deserved. Our deepest sympathy to you all but you can be so proud of John and that should keep your spirits up. God bless you all and Antoinette, I am one of the Gildea twins that worked in Cohoes Savings Bank many years ago!! You were always there for Johnny, too!
