Mark Major Obituary

Major, Mark A. EDINBURG, N.Y. Attorney Mark A. Major, 51 years old, of N. Shore Road, died Tuesday, December 8, 2009 in Saratoga. Mark was born September 7, 1958 in Amsterdam, a son of Gene and Barbara Helmin Major. He was raised in Hagaman and was a graduate of Amsterdam High School, Union College and Albany Law School. Mark resided in Saratoga County and was a longstanding resident of Edinburg. Mark was engaged in private practice in Saratoga and was Saratoga County first assistant public defender. He was a member of the Saratoga County Bar Association. Mark enjoyed boating and his time at the lake. Survivors in addition to his parents, Gene and Barbara Major of Hagaman, include his wife, the former Karen Van Schaik of Edinburg; his son and daughter, Mathieu and Gina Major of Saratoga; his sisters, Deborah (Dr. Michael) Halvonik of Cincinnati, Ohio and Lisa (Steven) Van Wagenen of Saratoga; two nephews, Christopher and Jonathan Halvonik; aunts, uncles and cousins. Mark was predeceased by his brother, Attorney Geoffrey E. Major who died February 21 of this year. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, December 12, 2009 at St. Stephen's Roman Catholic Church in Hagaman with Father Martin DeRose officiating. Burial will be in St. Stephen's Cemetery. The family will receive relatives and friends on Friday from 4 until 7 p.m. at Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam. I am so sorry for your loss. Words cannot express the sorrow that I feel for the whole family right now. We were just talking last week about his plans for the office, his wonderful life, how his parents were doing. I am stunned. Both Mark and Jeff were great guys, and competent attorneys.
