Maureen Smith Obituary

Smith, Maureen
ALBANY - Maureen Frances Smith, known to those that loved her as "Moe," "Mosie," and "Mimi," died on August 4, 2025, after a brief illness, with her family by her side. A lifelong resident of Albany, she was born on March 26, 1941, and graduated from St. John's Academy in Rensselaer in 1959, where she developed friendships that spanned the decades of time. She began her career as a switchboard operator with New York Telephone, eventually retiring as a manager in the 1990s. Never one to sit idle, she took on various retail jobs in retirement and thoroughly enjoyed the employee discounts.
Dubbed "spicy" by her family, Maureen was one of a kind that called it liked she saw it, and was not afraid to share her opinions. Maureen was fiercely independent and had many hobbies and talents and a large circle of friends. She liked a strong Old Fashioned and excellent food, and was often meeting up with her friends and family to enjoy both. Maureen had beautiful flower gardens that would make a master gardener proud, and an incredible talent for knitting, and the yarn to show for it. Her fashion sense was second to none, and she always made sure to have a little sparkle. Most of all, Maureen loved animals, and was a caring and nurturing owner of her dogs and cats throughout her life.
Maureen is survived by her daughter, Nicole (Larry) Miller; her grandchildren, Kathleen (Brian) Hodgdon, Daniel (Gina) O'Neill, and Cole (Viena) Miller; her great-grandchildren, Audrey Hodgdon and Dominick (DJ) O'Neill; her siblings, Patricia Hausler and Michael Smith; her nieces and nephews, Bret and Zulvey Smith, Kenny Hausler, Darin (Nicole) Smith, and Mireya, Philipp, and Kevin Smith; her best friend, Betsy Gallogly; and last, but certainly not least, her beloved dog, Shyla, and her (mostly) beloved cat, Agnes. Maureen was predeceased by her mother, Frances Smith; and her father, Edward Smith Jr.
A celebration of Maureen's life will occur on Saturday, October 4, 2025, at O'Slattery's Irish Restaurant and Pub, in Delmar, at 2:00 p.m. Her family extends their sincere gratitude to her neighbor, Moo, who was always there to be a friend. In lieu of flowers, head out to lunch, tell stories, and enjoy the company.

Although I hadn't seen my cousin in years, I can still hear the sound of her laugh. A great memory.

I was so sorry to read of Maureen's passing. She knit
with us for many years at the Bethlehem Town Hall.
A fantastic knitter with a marvelous sense of humor.
She will be missed.
