Michael Grady Obituary

Grady, Michael D. WATERVLIET, N.Y. Michael David Grady, 38, of Watervliet, died on Saturday, July 18, 2009 at the UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester, Mass. Born in Niskayuna, N.Y. on September 18, 1970, Michael was the beloved son of Judith A. Hudson Grady of Watervliet and the late Daniel W. Grady Sr. He was raised in Watervliet, where he graduated from St. Brigid's School and later graduated, with the class of 1988, from the LaSalle Institute in Troy. He furthered his education at Southern Vermont College in Bennington, Vt., where he received a bachelor's degree and where one of his biggest highlights was assisting former Mountaineer head basketball coach, Brian Fruscio, whom he considered a friend and mentor. Following his college graduation, Michael briefly worked as a teacher's aide and so enjoyed the position that he returned to school, attending the College of Saint Rose in Albany, N.Y., where he received his master's degree in education. Michael taught elementary education at the Sacred Heart School in Troy, N.Y. for eight years and for the past year, was employed by the State Department of Taxation and Finance in Albany as a tax representative. Michael enjoyed thoroughbred horse racing and experienced all aspects of the sport. He was a knowledgeable handicapper and even once shared partial ownership of a thoroughbred. He enjoyed visiting gaming centers at Turning Stone, Mohegan Sun and, most memorably, his trips to Las Vegas with his Uncle Jack. He was a fan of the NY Giants and the NY Mets. Michael was a member of the Watervliet Lodge of Elks and was a communicant of St. Ambrose Church in Latham. In addition to his mother, Michael is survived by his loving brother, Daniel W. Grady Jr. and his sister, Lori Grady Winterbourne; his nieces and nephews, Shannon, Danielle, Lauren and Danny Grady and Lindsey and Kevin Winterbourne; his great-niece, Keira McCloskey; his maternal grandmother, Jessie Martin of Ga.; as well as many aunts, uncles and cousins. He was the cherished and special nephew of the late Jack and Barbara Gernon. Michael's family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the doctors, nurses and staff of the 6th floor ICU at UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester, for the special care they gave to Michael during his stay. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday at 11 a.m. in St. Ambrose Church, Latham and interment will follow in St. Agnes Cemetery, Menands. Relatives and friends are invited and may call at the Parker Bros. Memorial, 2013 Broadway in Watervliet on Tuesday, 4-8 p.m. For those who wish to remember Michael in a special way, donations may be made to the Derek Murphy Fund in care of the Parker Bros. Memorial, 2013 Broadway, Watervliet, NY 12189. For directions and on-line guest registry, please visit www.parkerbrosmemorial.com

I’m saddened to hear about Michael’s passing. Michael and I graduated from LaSalle in 1988. We didn’t really know each other that well, but it appears we shared some of the same interests. When we meet again in the after life, we’ll have to plan to throw some dice together.

Dear Aunt Judy, Danny and Lori,
What a testament tonight was to Michael. He was loved by so many and so much. His smile was truly what many will hold close in their hearts. From the time he was a little boy that smile melted many a heart. My favorite memory of Michael was many, many years ago when he had to have those cowboy boots!!! I remember my Dad searching high and low for them. That day seems like yesterday to me. Then over the years--he became this remarkable man, always a smile, a laugh and that mischievious look in his eye!! He planned an awesome family reunion for us a couple years ago... I am grateful to have had Michael in my life. Seeing the pictures tonight of Michael with Uncle Danny was so wonderful. They are together again. Both of them with their beautiful smiles. May the road rise up to meet you my dear cousin. I will miss you.... Love, Kelly

Judy, Lori and Danny, I am so sorry to hear about Mike. Having spent time with Mike from 2nd Grade at St. Brigid's, thru High School at LaSalle, we always had a lot of laughs together. Please know that he and all of you, will be in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. Mike was the kind of person who made you feel better about your day from just being around him. That is a quality that is not taught. He will always be a special guy to everyone who was fortunate enough to know him!

Dear Aunt Judy, Danny, and Lori,

I am so sorry that I am unable to be with you all during this time. I hope you know that I am with you in my thoughts and heart. I am so deeply sad over Mike's passing. I will miss his great smile, his laughter, and our chit chats when I come home. Keith has always said he was the "Teddy Bear" of the family as he was always the gentle kind spirit... loving, fun, and full of laughter. I/we will miss him greatly. I loved him so very much as I love all of you... I hope it eases your mind as it does mine to know that he is with his father again and that one day we will all be together again under God's Good Grace.
Please know that I am praying for you all, thinking of you all, and with you all in spirit... Julie & Keith

Mrs. Grady, Dan, Lori, and family, I am so very sorry to hear about Mike’s passing.

I first met Mike, almost thirty years ago when I was in Kindergarten at St. Brigid’s in Watervliet. At the time, Shaun Yanni (a childhood friend) and I decided that it wasn’t “cool” for our mothers to drop us off at school since we were in – gasp – Kindergarten! After what I would surmise was some consulting with Mrs. Grady by our mothers, we were surprised to find out that Mike offered to let us walk to school with him. This was great! We got to walk to school with one of the big kids in the neighborhood - he was in the FOURTH GRADE – which was big time for us. We were untouchable!

Growing up, Mike never hesitated to include anyone – big or small, talented or not. It did not matter whether we were playing basketball, kick ball, football, hide-n-seek, or whatever.

Mike had a big heart and was a great role-model for us (at-the-time) younger kids. After La Salle, when he went to Southern Vermont College and got into coaching and teaching, I was not surprised.

Again, I am very sorry to hear about Mike. My family and I will keep him and his family in our prayers.

My Dear Judy, There are just no words to express how I feel. Your loss of Michael,I know is unbearable right now. Please remember that you have so many good friends here at Sales tax that want to lessen your burden if they can. I lost my son Michael too many years ago and the pain does lessen but the memories are still there, and I cherish them as you will too. I am so sorry that I can not make it tonight, but I will be at the church tomorrow. I know you need a hug ....!Michael's in heaven now and is hoping your pain will lessen in time. My thoughts and prayers are with you honey, Mary Holmes

To The Grady family,
Shock and disbelief are the first things that come to mind. Your son and brother taught both of my daughters at Sacred Heart, always quick with a positive note before he disscussed weaknesses that needed to be addressed. We are so very sorry for your loss as you grieve the passing of Mike. Many grieve with you. With deep sympathy, love, and prayers.

I've only known Michael a short time. He sat in front of me at work but there was an instant friendship with him. Michael was a very private person but did open up to me and I feel we had a special relationship. I will never forget Michael and his huge smile, his wonderful outlook on life, and his laugh. His laugh would always make me laugh. There were times when neither one of us had to speak to understand where the other one was at. Michael was an inspiration to all who knew him. I am so saddened by the loss of Michael. I met him and the Grady family when I use to deliver the newspaper to their home. He was a wonderful man, with a gentle way about him. He was always willing to stop and take the time to chat and catch up on life. I remember several conversations we had as we both volunteered teaching religion class to the children of Waterlviet and we were both educators. It looks like God called another angel up to heaven to watch over us. I will keep the Grady family in my prayers so that God will give you the strength you need to help you through this terrible time. With my deepest sympathies and prayers-
