Michael Martone Obituary

Martone, Michael
MECHANICVILLE - Michael Martone, more commonly known as "Mike" or "Coach", passed away peacefully on Monday, August 19, surrounded by his loving family. Mike was the son of the late John and Philomena Zurlo Martone. He was born in Mechanicville in 1929, and graduated from Mechanicville High school in 1946. He played varsity basketball, football, and baseball and earned a four-year scholarship to play varsity basketball as a guard for St. Bonaventure University. In 1952, he married his high school classmate, Jean Colucci, and they celebrated their 72nd wedding anniversary in May. Two years after they were married, Mike and Jean moved to Miami, Fla., so Mike could teach physical education at K-6 Melrose Elementary. In 1955, Mike was called back to Mechanicville to teach physical education and coach football, basketball, golf, and cross country. Mike became Athletic Director for Mechanicville High School, a position he held until his retirement in 1985. Mike was also the Pro at Mechanicville Golf Club from 1980 to 1992, was an instructor for Shenendehowa Adult Education, and taught private golf lessons. Mike and Jean spent the winters in West Palm Beach Florida, where Mike was a starter at Wycliffe Country Club, was an Assistant Golf Coach at Wellington High School, where he coached an international match with Russia, was Caddy Master for the LPGA at Wycliffe Golf Course for five years, and worked as a starter at Madison Green Golf Course. Some of Mike's fondest memories include creating the Summer Swim Program for Mechanicville High School, being part of the Sectional Basketball Committee for 25 years, serving as Section Two Golf Chairman for 25 years, and taking winning golfers to the Cornell State Tournament for 25 years. In 1958, Mike won the Northeast Golf Coach of the Year Award and in 1960, won the Class B Basketball Championship. When Mike was not on the golf course or teaching lessons, he enjoyed spending time with the loves of his life - his wife, Jean; his children, Patty Martone Carrolo and Joe Carrolo, Marybeth Martone Rocco and Lou Rocco; and grandchildren, Elizabeth Carrolo Fitzgibbon and Jonathan Fitxgibbon, and Emily Carrolo and Conor Harrity. Mike was predeceased by his sister, Rose Marie Krantz; and his infant sister, Pasqualine Martone.
