Jan E. Martone

Horseheads, New York

Passed away on January 13, 2026 at the age of 70. He was born in Derby, Connecticut on May 28, 1955 to the late Caroline H. (Burchard) and Charles E. Sickler, Sr. He is predeceased by daughter Martina M. Martone; step-father Ernest A. Martone, Sr.; siblings Charles E. Martone, Ormina and Ernest A. Martone Jr.; mother-in-law Loy J. (Thomas) Rumsey; and father-in-law Mahlon S. Rumsey.

He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Jenny L. (Rumsey) Martone; daughter Amanda L. Martone; fur-daughter Dakota Martone; many nieces and nephews including Norman (Tammy) Martone and Ryan Rumsey; many cousins including Bonnie & Mark Rightmire; several half-siblings; and siblings-in-law Myron (Debe) Rumsey, and David Rumsey.

Jan wore many hats during his life: son, brother, husband, father, 1974 graduate of Thomas A. Edison High School, bottler for Fawn Beverage, soldier in the United States Army Reserves, scrap yard worker, custodian/utility worker for several companies, and worked as a Sam's Club sales associate for 21 years until his retirement. He enjoyed taking things apart to clean or fix them and put them back together, and had a special knack for finding things that had gotten lost in the shuffle of life. Jan had a loving heart and a generous soul: if you needed anything and he had it to spare, it was yours; and he could often be found helping stranded motorists on the road. All throughout his high school years, Jan was proud to be the only one in his class to participate in the Tutorial Program, which taught younger students to read. He had a soft spot for all kinds of animals - especially dogs, and was an adoring pet-parent to many a furbaby (Rip, Coco, Missy, Tasha, Lucky, Cooper, & Chippy, to name a few)! Jan had a passion for food and a curiosity about the cuisines of other countries. His other hobbies included coin collecting, gardening, hunting, fishing, tinkering, and listening to any and all kinds of music.

A Memorial Service and Celebration of Life will be held at the Oakwood United Methodist, 212 Oakwood Ave, Elmira Heights, NY 14903 on Wednesday, January 21, 2026 from 3-6pm. Rev. Darlene Hyde presiding. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to any animal rescue organization in his name.
