Stephen Smith Obituary

Smith, Stephen W.
COLONIE - Stephen Smith, 66, passed away on March 14, 2023, suddenly and peacefully in his sleep from cardiac arrest.
He was a very devout Catholic who was born on August 25, 1956, to Mary Mulderry Smith and Dennis Smith in Murfreesboro, Tenn. The family then moved to Buffalo. He graduated from St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute in 1974, and Manhattan College majoring in physical education in 1978. He earned a master's degree in special education from The College of Saint Rose.
He was a much beloved and respected teacher of physical education at the former St. Theresa's School in Albany, Arbor Hill School, Albany High School, and the Albany School of Humanities, where he met his soulmate Ann, who was also a teacher at Arbor Hill School.
He married the love of his life, Ann, and adopted her three children, Karen, Mark and Gregory. Steve loved his wife and children with every fiber of his being. Steve's calm demeanor and sense of humor created a close-knit family with values of unconditional love and respect for God, humanity, and country.
Steve was always available for a good time. He was the social director of the family. He taught the fundamentals of basketball to his sons beginning when they were five and six years old while coaching the weekend Arbor Hill Youth Program and Albany School of Humanities Summer Program.
Steve was a basketball official and a proud member of IAABO36 for over 35 years while serving 15 years as board secretary and as a member of the Executive Committee. He was a mentor to many officials. Steve made long and lasting friendships with the referees and their families. Steve "Smitty," had a talent for bringing people together. He organized his friends who met every year in Bolton Landing for a weekend of golf, card games, and cigars then again at the annual golf and March Madness trip to Florida.
He was a very giving person who volunteered for over 20 years officiating basketball events. Steve coordinated the ZIP tournament in Manhattan to raise money to continue the work of his cousin, Stephen Mulderry, who perished at the World Trade Center in 2001. He also volunteered for the Referees Against Cancer tournament, the Special Olympics, Parkinson's Disease, and many more. His willingness to help others was one of the hallmarks of his character. Steve was a very special person who was a selfless caregiver possessing a ready smile, a quick wit and shoulders to lean on.
His grandsons, Jovani and Logan, were the apple of his eye. He thoroughly enjoyed being their Papa. He was an avid fan of the Buffalo Bills and the Boston Red Sox.
Steve is predeceased by his son, Mark; and his brother, Gregory, as well as his parents. Steve is survived by his daughter, Karen (Gregory Messur); and son, Gregory. He is also survived by his siblings, Mark, Amy (Joe Luciano), Denise (Merle McIssac), Christopher (Amy), and Jeremy (Jill); many cousins, nieces and nephews. Steve is further survived by his constant canine companion, Gracie.
Steve mentioned to Ann that he knew his mission in life - it was to make people happy. This was manifested by the vast number of people who loved him. Steve, your mission on this Earth was accomplished. Well done for a life well lived.
Funeral arrangements will be at the Cannon Funeral Home, 2020 Central Ave., Albany. Chris and Family,
My brother Steve and I were deeply saddened to hear of Stephen´s sudden passing. Please accept our most heartfelt condolences.
Growing up with you on Bridle Path, I vividly remember Steve´s welcoming smile, and positive disposition. Our parents thoroughly enjoyed their conversations with Steve, as he kept them posted about his educational goals, and future plans before going off to college.
He left an indelible mark as an outstanding role model and big brother to his siblings, and us "younger" neighborhood kids.
Blessed to have had the Smith family as neighbors for many years. Condolences also for your parents, and brother Greg. Find strength in your faith and strong family bonds that you share, as you move through the days and weeks going forward.

Dear Ann,
I ran into Steve several months ago, and it was delightful to talk to him about our days at Arbor Hill , and to catch up on our lives since then. I remember that he showed me several photos of quilts and other needlework projects that you had completed. He was so proud of you and so warm in his anecdotes of you and your family.
I am so sorry that I wasn't aware of his passing in time to attend his services, but I have kept you in my prayers and thoughts . His warm heart is at rest, and I send you thoughts of comfort and peace.
Take good care of yourself and your family.

Ann and family.
Steve will forever be our hearts. He was so gracious and thoughtful towards our sweet mother. He helped her fill her grieving heart with his many visits . His warm smile and gentle ways filled her with so much pure joy especially at the sight of Steve at her front door. Whenever he ventured to Buffalo he made it a point to see Norma. He did this for 50 years. She loved Steve so much.
Our hearts are broken but know the good die young and that God now needed Steve in heaven. Thank you Steve
for your inner beauty and kindness. It will be long remembered.

To Ann, and the entire extended Smith family,

I was stunned to hear of Steve´s passing. My heart goes out to you and your entire family.

I was fortunate enough to be a high school classmate of Steve´s at St. Joe´s. I became friends with Steve at St. Joe´s, and though I didn´t see or talk to Steve a lot over the years, we stayed friends, and had the occasion to be in contact much more over the last few years. Steve made every get-together more fun and more positive. He was a class person in every way. He had a smile, a story, and an encouraging word for everyone he was with. And he lived life to its fullest.

I will remember Steve in my prayers. And I will also keep you and your entire family in my prayers in the difficult days ahead Ann.

God Bless,

Michael Larrivee

As a friend of the family, I spent most of my high school free time (in the late 70s) hanging around his parents household in Williamsville. Although I haven’t seen Stephen in years, I will always remember him as a generous, quick-witted, outgoing force of nature who unabashedly loved people and spending time with his family and all his great, lifelong friends. He exemplified a life well-lived life and left all who knew him a great legacy of faith, love, and service. I know he will be terribly missed by everyone who knew him. I extend my most sincere condolences to his family.

I can´t believe I´m reading of Steve´s obituary . What a great human he was . Always kind and happy. I got to know Steve from working at the dental office and his love of sports as my children were athletes . I always enjoyed his knowledge of the games. He was one I missed when I left suddenly due to illness.

I'm one of the many refs fortunate enough to have learned from and to have worked alongside Steve over the years. Last year after I finished working my JV game at CBA someone said he was in the crowd. I was happy to say hello, catch up, and chat about our beloved Bills. He was a great guy and he will certainly be missed.

To the Smith Family and of course, one of my best friends, Smitty-Happy St.Paddy´s Day!!!
A friend for over 50 years, starting at St.Joe´s, going to St.Paddy´s Day parades in NYC, while he was at Manhattan College to road trips, weddings, graduations, retirements and beyond, for being 300 miles away our friendship never wavered. He was always there, when it counted, that to me is a definition of a true friend!
He will be missed, but, never forgotten.
Ann and the Family, we are so sorry for your loss, he loved you guys so much!

Our heartfelt condolences to Ann and the family. Smitty was a great guy who lived life to the fullest.

Teacher, referee, sports enthusiast, event organizer, and friend to all. Anyone who spent some time with him is guaranteed to have funny stories about what he brought to wherever he went. The term "people person" is an understatement.

This photo is from one of our annual Headman Social Club Buffalo Bills Trips that he was a key part of. That year we went to see the Green Bay Packers and in typical Steve Smith fashion he orchestrated an advanced email dialogue with Mark Murphy, the team president, and a former Buffalonian. Lots to the story, but as a result of Smitty this NFL team president (pictured) walked all the way up to the top row of the corner end zone section to say hello and chat with our group 20 minutes before kick off.

Smitty, you left us too early, but we know you´ll be pulling for your Buffalo Bills from above and will want us all to follow your lifelong example of fun and friendship.
