Irvine Morris Obituary

MORRIS Irvine Ernest Morris, Jr., 85, passed away Friday, July 17, 2009, in Jacksonville FL after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease and complications from a stroke. He was born in Atlanta, GA September 20, 1923, to I.E. Morris and Dorothy Fenn Morris. He attended public schools in Atlanta and Birmingham, AL, graduating from Phillips High School in Birmingham. He attended University of Alabama Tuscaloosa as a freshman and was in the Sigma Chi fraternity. He was then drafted into the Army where he served in the European theater in WWII under Gen. Patton. After returning home unharmed, he attended University of Georgia where he graduated with a bachelor's degree in journalism and was an honorary member of the journalism fraternity, Sigma Delta Chi. After graduation, he worked for the Georgia Press Association. He was then recalled to active duty in the Army during the Korean conflict where he served as Public Information Officer for U.S. Army Europe (USAREUR). Upon discharge from the Army, he worked for the Atlanta Chamber of Commerce as Public Information Director and started Atlanta Magazine. He later became an International Trade Specialist for the U.S. Department of Commerce at the district office in Atlanta and ultimately retired from the Dept. of Commerce in 1979. During his time there, he served as president of the World Trade Organization for Georgia and Atlanta. He was honored by the Chamber of Commerce of Atlanta for expanding foreign trade in Atlanta and Georgia. In addition, he earned a law degree from Woodrow Wilson College of Law in Atlanta. After retirement he and his wife settled in Winter Springs, FL for many years. He served as president of the NARFE, was a member of the Military Order of World Wars, and was a member of the University Club and English-Speaking Union of Winter Park. He was also a member of All Saints Episcopal Church in Thomasville, GA. They later moved to Jacksonville, FL where they lived at the Carriage Club and, most recently, the Atrium at Regency. Throughout his lifetime he avidly pursued his hobby of photography. In addition to being a talented photographer, he was also known for his quick wit and sense of humor, which we will all miss greatly. He is survived by his devoted wife of 57 years, Maurise Carlisle Morris, his daughter Mary Sue Morris Olsen of St. Johns County, and his grandchildren, including Matt and Kristina Olsen of Jacksonville, FL. His three sisters, Helen M. Branch, Mary M. Patton and Clara M. Martin, reside in Georgia. He will receive a military burial at Jacksonville National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Alzheimer's Association will be appreciated. Arrangements are entrusted to Hardage Giddens Mandarin Chapel, 904-288-0025. I have fond memories of Uncle Irvine and all of our family get togethers. I remember his photography and especially the WWII pictures I used for a school project. I felt so honored that he let me borrow them! My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

I will miss Irvine's warm smile and firm handshake. He had a way of always making you feel welcomed (even if you were a Gator and had just beaten his beloved Alabama or Georgia). I am so glad that Kristina and Matt were close to him. Irvine excelled at everything he did and I am sure he was instrumental in passing this trait on to them.

Brother, as we called him was always a sort of hero to live up to. For most of the girls lives he was away at school and the Army. But we always valued his opinion on happenings in our life. I know I envied his ability to speak several languageand his artistic eye. Sharing holiday visits will always be a great memory.

I look back on the long years of life with my "Big Brother" and recall his broad intellect, his good humor, and his varied experiences in the world of work and pleasure travel. Our parents referred to us as,"Irvine ,Jr. and the three little girls." He was four years older than the oldest of us, so we were usually "Pests" in his view! We followed his career in the service and I remember his being at the University of Georgia to finish his degree when I started mine. Many, many memories...

He always had a soft spot for his three fiesty blondes (wife, daughter and grandaugher) and showed us a tender side of him. We were his "sweeties." Grandaddy lived an amazing life and did so much with it. I was always amazed by how much he knew about so many different things, from foreign languages to journalism and photography. He inspired my love of journalism. I only wish I could learn half of what he knew or experience half of what he experienced in his life. He was never afraid to be himself, develop his own opinions and stand by them. I admired his strong sense of self. Grandaddy was an original like no other. I am so lucky that I was close to him growing up and he is such a big part of my life.

I was saddened to hear of Uncle Irvine's passing and want to let those closest to him know that I share their loss. Even when I was a young child, it was apparent that Uncle Irvine was a man of great intellect. Yet, my most enduring memories of him are his smile and the sound of his laugh. I hope to see you all soon.

Uncle Irvine is an integral part of my childhood memories. The place in my heart and mind that those memories occupy becomes more treasured and special with each passing year and with the passing of each constituent, like Uncle Irvine. God's peace and comfort be with all of you during this time.

Irvine Jr. always seemed to have a twinkle in his eye. He had a great sense of humor. Although he was my cousin, he fell more in the category of a favorite uncle. I treasure the times and travels I was privileged to share with him, Maurise and Mary Sue. Please know my thoughts and prayers are with you all at this time. Harriet

I will always remember Uncle Irvine taking pictures at our family gatherings, as well as his contributions to the laughter. Even though we didn't get to see y'all much in recent years, it was always fun and heart-warming.

I was always "Daddy's little girl" until the very end. I feel a great sense of loss now that he is gone...I will miss him so much. And yes, Daddy, I will take good care of Mama.

Dear Maurise, I was saddened to hear of Irvine's passing. I have many fond memories of Irvine while visiting with the kids (Amanda and John) at your Thomasville, Ga. and Florida homes. To me, Irvine's wit and sense of humor will always remain his trade mark. He enjoyed a good cocktail and was a lover of Georgia football. Go Dawgs he would say. He will forever be remembered by me!

Dear Maurise,
I hope you will remember me, Joe Valsi from Chapter 1671 NARFE. I was very saddened to read of Morris's passing. He was a long time member of NARFE and of my chapter. I was always delighted to talk to him. He was very well spoken and enjoyed many of our meetings where he could be with other members with the same interests and he shared stories of his interesting life with us. I was so glad to talk to you on Tuesday. We will be in touch. Joe Valsi

He was such an inspiration to me and was more than I can ever hope to become. If I can grow to be even half the man he was, I will be a great man too.
