Joan Pickens

PICKENS Joan (Nachtigall) Pickens of Atlantic Beach, Florida, passed away Saturday, December 3, 2005. She was born on July 19, 1929 in Ft. Wayne, Indiana. She attended North Side High School and Indiana/Purdue University, Ft. Wayne. On December 23, 1952, she took pity on a budding Naval Aviator, who loved her deeply, then and now, and married him. Twenty-six years and many duty stations later, she and this lucky son-of-a-gun (now a Captain, thanks in large part to her intelligence and people skills) retired to a paradise they called Harvest Home (after the book), south of Orange Park on the St. John's River, where for the next thirty years they lived their dream. Her ashes will be scattered in the river from the pier she helped build. Family members include her husband William A. Pickens; two children, Melody Pickens and James Pickens; one grandchild, Samuel Fowler, and her sister, Susan Nachtigall of Ft. Wayne, Indiana. A Memorial Service will be held at Fleet Landing in the auditorium at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 10, 2005, with the Reverend William Kelly officiating.
