BRUNO Carl Thomas Carl Bruno, age 83, of Toledo, died at Flower Hospital on Wednesday, August 30, 2006, of complications from a stroke. He graduated from Libbey High School (Class of 1940) and The University of Toledo and received a Master's of Social Work Administration degree from George Williams College. Carl was extremely proud of his U.S. Naval Submarine Service, where he served as Electrician's Mate, Second Class in the Pacific Theatre from 1942-1946. In 1960, Carl met the love of his life, Velerh J. Huffman, at a YMCA Business & Professionals dance. They married on June 30, 1961 and enjoyed 45 years together. Carl was involved in many organizations: 16 years with the Toledo Metro Federal Credit Union Board; President of Public Employee Retirees of Ohio Chapter 4 and a member of AFSCME Retirees, Chapter 109; ASPA; Chambers Chapter of NAFYR (Retired YMCA Directors); NASW and volunteered at Wildwood Manor House. Carl was a devoted member of Monroe Street United Methodist Church, where he served for several years on the Social Concerns Committee, as well as being very active in the Methodist Men's Breakfast group. Velerh,

We want you to know that earth has no sorrow that heaven cannot heal. It was so refreshing to listen to Carl each Sunday service singing God's praises and to see his smile. We will surely miss him and want you to know that he expressed so much love for you. Our prayers are with you and your family.

Dear Vererh and Melanie, I was saddened to hear of Carl's death and while I remember most of the things he told me about himself, I want you to know he was most proud of his wife and daughter and his life as a Social Worker. To sum it up, Carl really was the kind of American we all should be. He loved life and the people and institutions he touched.

I knew Carl, very well, at Libbey High School... We had great days there. But, as we served in WW2 and got married we lost contact... I graduated in 1938... "Our Libbey colors , blue and gold, ...". We loved to sing that song... Reading the obit, Carl will be given a "war,m welcome" and rest--"he earned it"...

Life will be different but you will "make it"...I know, it has been 7+ years for me.. God bless you all...

My sympathy to all the family and friends of Carl. I worked with Carl at the Dept. of Human Services and have many fond memories. I think of Carl as a gentle and kind person. I remember him organizing the employees in singing Christmas songs throughout the workplace.

I have not seen Carl since my retirement in 1991 but the memories of him are still very vivid.

He will not be forgotten. The family has my prayers during this time of loss.
