Edward DOERMANN Obituary

DOERMANN Edward L. M.D. 9/10/1919-3/21/2012 Dr. Edward L. Doermann, age 92, died peacefully Wednesday, March 21, 2012, at Parkcliffe Community in Toledo. He was born September 10, 1919, in Cincinnati, Ohio, to Edward Charles and Louise (Barkau) Doermann. They moved to Toledo in 1933. Dr. Doermann graduated from Scott High School in 1937. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Toledo in 1941. He attended the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, receiving his medical degree in 1943. After serving in the U.S. Army Medical Corps during World War II and completing his surgical residency in Madison, Wisconsin, he and his family returned to Toledo to begin a distinguished career and raise his family. He practiced general surgery from 1950 to 1990. Throughout his career he held several positions, including Chief of Staff (1975-1977) and Chief of Surgery (1977-1979) at Flower Hospital, President of the Academy of Medicine of Toledo and Lucas County, and President of the Toledo Clinic Foundation and Toledo Clinic, Inc. He also chaired the Intern Resident Committee and the Tissue Committee at Flower Hospital. Dr. Doermann published articles pertaining to surgical techniques and innovations. He was on active staff at Flower and St. Charles Hospitals and was highly regarded at both. He retired from the Toledo Clinic in 1994. He was a co-founder of the Toledo Racquet Club, Toledo's first indoor tennis facility, in 1968. He played tennis regularly until age 91. He traveled with family and friends. Ed loved to fish and often had great fishing tales to tell. For most situations, he had a good joke that would bring smiles to everyone in the room. For the past 55 years, he brought his entire family together every summer at Melwel Lodge in Ontario, Canada, where his children and grandchildren learned to fish, swim, water ski and cliff jump. He was preceded in death by his parents. Norma (Portman) Doermann, his beloved wife of 55 years, also preceded him in death in 1997. He is survived by their three children, Perry (Mary) Doermann of Medina, Ohio, Marilyn (Robert) Kellum of Tipton, Michigan, and Neil (Marilyn) Doermann of Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, and grandchildren Christian Doermann of Charlottesville, Virginia, Lindsey Doermann of Seattle, Washington, Daniel Kellum of Amstetten, Austria, Benson (Jessica) Kellum of Plymouth, Michigan, Robert Spencer (fiancée Amelia Rodgers) Kellum of St. Louis, Missouri, and Allison, Abigail, and Nicholas Doermann of Menomonee Falls. There will be a Memorial Service this Friday, March 30, 2012, at 4:00 p.m., at Monroe Street United Methodist Church, 3613 Monroe Street, Toledo with a reception to follow. Memorial contributions, in lieu of flowers, may be made to Monroe Street Methodist Church or the Dr. Edward L. Doermann and Norma R. Doermann Scholarship Fund, established in 2000, to benefit pre-med and nursing students at the University of Toledo. My sincerest condolences to the entire family. I know Dr. and Mrs Doermann via Neil when we both worked at The Toledo Clinic, in the early 70's when I was earning money for nursing school!
I just happened to hear of Dr. Doermann's passing and came here. Life truly has come full circle.
God Bless the family.

Dr. Doermann was just the coolest guy to me, from my high school days when he was the fun and funny Dad of my best friend Marilyn, watching Laugh-In with us, to my student and graduate nurse days at Flower where I knew him as a very popular, skilled surgeon, whose patients always did well and who was loved and greatly respected by the nursing staff. He lived life to the fullest, and leaves behind countless friends and admirers, and I know he'll be missed. He was an amazing man.

To Dr. Doermann's family: my thoughts and prayers are with you. I worked at Toledo Clinic, and with Dr. Doermann the three years prior to his retirement. An excellent surgeon, he was truly loved and appreciated by his patients and we enjoyed his smile and humor in the office, too. We also shared memories of vacations to the BVI. He had such a good time there with his family, and I know that those, plus other, wonderful memories will help you. He will be missed. May he rest in peace.
