Gary Burget Obituary

Dr. Gary Burget

Dr. Gary Burget, widely recognized as a gifted innovator in the profession of Plastic Surgery, died on May 31, 2017, in Chicago. Dr. Burget was born in Toledo, OH on April 20, 1941.

He attended Thomas A. DeVilbiss High School and served as president of the student council his senior year, after which he entered Yale University, graduating with a BA in English. He continued on to Yale Medical School receiving his Doctor of Medicine degree in 1967.

Dr. Burget began his Plastic Surgery career in Miami, FL and opened his first office there. He subsequently relocated to Chicago, dedicating his new practice towards reconstructive surgery of the face. Dr. Burget pioneered nasal reconstructive surgery for 30 years in Chicago before retiring in 2016. In 1994 Dr. Burget published his sentinel book with Dr. Fred Menick titled "Aesthetic Reconstruction of the Nose". Dr. Burget twice received the James Barrett Brown award in Plastic Surgery (1990, 2008) from the American Association of Plastic Surgeons and was also honored with their Clinician of the Year Award in 2006. He was one of seven American Plastic Surgeons invited to present at the Johannes Dieffenbach 200th birthday celebration in Berlin, Germany. There, he received a standing ovation for his presentation from this elite group of renowned surgeons. In addition to his surgical genius, Dr. Burget was a consummate teacher and mentor. He graciously shared his knowledge and gave countless lectures around the world. Dr. Burget's latest publication, "Aesthetic Reconstruction of the Child's Nose", will be remembered as the definitive reference for nasal reconstruction in children.

Dr. Burget was a fascinating individual with wide-ranging interests, among them fly fishing, English literature, history of medicine, the fine arts, theatre and opera. He actively supported the arts as well as environmental and civil liberties causes.

Dr. Burget was preceded in death by his parents, Dean E. and Marie A. Burget; niece, A. Undine Peeples (Burget); and nephew, Malcolm Withey. Dr. Burget is survived by his brother, Dr. Dean Burget; sister, Anne Withey (Burget); nephews, Mark (Ann), and Kevin (Rebecca) Burget; nieces, Ainslee and Gillian Withey; and seven great and four great-great-nieces and nephews - all family that he deeply cherished.

Gary will be remembered by family and friends for his amazing mind, his unique humor, his zest for life, and for his kindness and generosity. Gary's ashes are interred alongside other members of his family at The Friends Cemetery in Quaker City, OH.

Dr. Burget - thank you for everything you did. Out of ... however many surgeons we saw you were the ONLY ONE who asked permission before touching my (then 12 y/o) face. Your compassion and kindness were as great as your masterful skills. I have the life I have today because of you. Thank you and rest in peace.
