Gregory Wojciechowski Obituary

Gregory Wojciechowski

1950-2025

Gregory Wojciechowski passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, August 14, 2025, following a sudden heart attack.

Born in 1950 to parents Richard and Elaine Wojciechowski, Greg was a protégé of local wrestling icons Dick Torio, Joe Scalzo, and University of Toledo coach Dick Wilson. As a youth training at Torio's Health Club, he excelled in wrestling, capturing back-to-back Ohio Heavyweight State Championships with unbeaten seasons at Whitmer High School in 1967 and 1968.

At the University of Toledo, Greg compiled an extraordinary 55–2 career record in just three varsity seasons, reaching the NCAA Heavyweight finals each year. He was the national runner-up in 1970 and 1972 and captured the NCAA National Championship in 1971. Between 1969 and 1979, he also won eight Freestyle National Amateur Athletic Union titles and five Greco-Roman national championships.

Greg pursued his Olympic dream throughout his career, competing for a place on the U.S. Olympic Freestyle and Greco-Roman Wrestling Teams in 1968, 1972, 1976, and 1980. Three times he was selected as an alternate. In 1980, he finally earned a full spot, winning both the freestyle and Greco-Roman Olympic Trials. However, due to the U.S. boycott of the Moscow Games, Greg never had the chance to compete on the Olympic stage.

He later transitioned to professional wrestling, performing for more than a decade under the name "The Great Wojo." He first won the World Wrestling Association (WWA) Heavyweight Championship in 1984, reclaiming the title again in 1985 and 1987 before retiring as champion.

Greg earned his degree in education from the University of Toledo in 1972 and went on to teach for more than 30 years, almost all within Toledo Public Schools. He also served as head wrestling coach at Archbold, Libbey, and Bowsher High Schools. A lifelong supporter of young athletes, Greg helped countless wrestlers with training, equipment, transportation, and encouragement. Earlier this year, he was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in Stillwater, Oklahoma, joining his mentors Torio, Scalzo, and Wilson-a career highlight he treasured deeply.

Greg was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He loved going for walks and bird watching, often sharing that he felt closest to God while outdoors. Known for his generosity, loyalty, and mentorship, he guided many young people who otherwise might not have had opportunities. His sudden passing leaves a deep void in the lives of those who loved him, but his kindness, strength, and unwavering devotion will be remembered always. His memory will live on through the countless lives he has touched, with his generosity, dedication, and kind spirit. He was truly "The Great Wojo" in every sense of the name. He will be dearly missed.

"Guts Grit and Gumption"

He is survived by his loving wife of 26 years, Hilda; his sons, Chad and Kyle (Kim) Wojciechowski; his stepchildren, Mona (Ralph), Melinda, John (Anita), and Michael (Olga); and grandchildren, Riley, Harper, Gregory Wojciechowski, Robert (Leticia) Born, Rene (Ellyse) Losoya, Monique (Devin) Villaloboz, John, Angelo, Julian, Christian, and Tori Pina, as well as many great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Elaine Wojciechowski, and his son Ryan.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, August 23, 2025, from 4–7 p.m. at The Premier, 4480 Heatherdowns Blvd., Toledo, Ohio. In addition, Greg will be honored with induction into the Championship International Wrestling Hall of Fame at a special tribute event on September 14 at the Skyway Rec Center in Oregon.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to causes close to Greg's heart, including Wounded Warriors and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

The family extends a heartfelt thank-you to three of Greg's dearest friends-Don, Myron, and Mark-for their love and support.

Earlier today

Greg and my husband David Oleneck were neighbors while growing up on Alexis Road. Dave and I went to a wedding several years ago and both of the men were excited to see one another. Over the years Dave would recall something the two of them had done together. Dave cherished the friendship.

Sometimes shirttails are out and other times are tucked in.
Greg and I are "shirttail" cousins. Over time we crossed
paths...trading favors, a happenstance, Grandma W'ski never missed a Saturday when you wrestled on TV... A life well matched!

Yesterday

I met Greg at Torio's. Over time we became good friends. Greg was kinda like a big brother. He helped train me when I started power lifting. We went to each others meets. We bounced at the Cave. And did janitorial work together. I helped Greg and his first wife move in their first home. When he went pro I was the guy walking around selling The Great Wojo paraphernalia. I still can't believe this had happened. He will be missed.

Sending a very heartfelt thank you to The Great Wojo for taking the time to mentor my son, not only as a coach but as a friend and human being. I am honored that my son was able to spend time with him and get to know him on a personal level. My son will no doubt take many things Greg said and did, with him on journey through adulthood and life. Thank you for taking him under your wing Wojo.
Sending his family my deepest condolences. He will truly be missed by many.

May he rest in peace, condolences to the family and friends. Importantly, Greg was a great ambassador for Toledo as well as one of Toledo's greatest athletes.

When I was a kid , we´d be out in the church field behind "the Great Wojo´s" house playing baseball. Greg would come out , walk across the field though all of us not saying a single word. He´d pick up a bat step up to the plate , nod to the pitcher. First pitch he´d knock that ball outta park and bounce it off the roof of his garage. We´d all cheer. He´d drop the bat and walk away, still not saying a word. He was our hero. The Great Wojo will live in our hearts forever!

I have spoken well of Greg since our time together at Libbey - I was there for three years always teaching in a program with Greg and Dan Macklemore (another really good guy). One day the principal (Mr. Norment) called me in to his office and asked if I had ever wrestled - I answered, "a little in high school", and he said "good, you're the new assistant wrestling coach". I said, "I'm not really interested...."he stopped me and said "Wojo will take the head coaching job with one condition - that you're his assistant, so congratulations, coach!".

We had a memorable experience for two years, and Greg developed some kids into really good wrestlers.
So, nothing but good memories of him - he was a great person, a caring good man. Deepest sympathy for your loss.

So sorry Hilda, Kyle and Chad. Greg was the sweetest man with the biggest heart. He never missed an opportunity to spend with the extended family. He easily connected with everyone. I loved talking to him. Even though we may not have seen each other we picked up like we were still talking before. He was sharp as a tack. Gonna miss those times Wojo. Very sad the family is getting thinner and thinner. Eternal rest my friend! Hilda you guys had a huge network. So many people to share memories with. He will always be with you watching over you.

Sending deepest sympathy from The Chuck Darnell Family. I am sure Chuck had many memories working with Greg at Bowsher and I often talked to him when I saw him walking at Copland Park. These are such difficult days but he certainly left his mark on so many.

The Clement family(Fred, Sue, Blacque, and Brad) has always regarded Greg with respect and admiration. We were privileged to share contact with Greg through many years of youth and high school wrestling programs. The Great Wojo was an exceptional coach and a kind gentleman. RIP.
Our sincere sympathy to his family.

R.I.P Greg is my cousin. He used to give me tickets to watch him wrestle with Dr. Jerry Grahm , Dick the bruiser , & Bo Bo Brazil at the civics center. He will be missed. Daniel Wojciechowski
