Helen Coury Obituary
03/06/1938 - 05/24/2023
Helen Margaret Coury, age 85, resident of Toledo, Ohio, passed away on Wednesday, May 24, 2023, at her daughter's home. She was born on March 6, 1938 in Cleveland, Ohio.
Helen enjoyed being active in the community. In the 1970s and 80s, Helen was very active in her local PTA, including serving as president. Also in the early 80s, she helped found and incorporate the North End Community Health Services (NECHS), which opened a medical/dental clinic on Stickney Avenue in North Toledo. This clinic provided critical services to an underserved, low income, population. Helen accomplished this all while raising five children. She even managed to earn an Associated Degree in Business Administration from the University of Toledo in December of 1982. But Helen didn't stop there. She once traveled to Washington D.C. with Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur to testify about the discrimination she experienced from insurance companies when purchasing her home in North Toledo.
Helen did not drive and instead used TARTA for transportation. She was a talker and made many friends throughout the years, while traveling back and forth to school and her jobs at Sears Service Center and Toledo Circulation Sales, including her dear friend Jim. Helen, Jim and Barb spent many weekends together at Cedar Point and also enjoyed getting together for dinner.
Helen's hobbies included watching sports, particularly the Cleveland Browns, Indians/Guardians and Cavaliers and NASCAR. She often spoke of how she got her love of sports from her mother who used to listen to the Indians games on the radio and keep track of the player stats for the game. Anyone who knew Helen also knows that she loved to collect teddy bears. She would say that she didn't just buy "any bear", but only those that had "something special" about them. She sure had a lot of special bears.
Those left to forever cherish her memory are her children, Maggie Monhollen, George Coury III, Barbara Coury, Michael Coury, and Helen Coury; as well as her siblings, John and Margaret.
