John Ruby Obituary
Captain John H.
Captain John H. Ruby, age 92, of Oregon, Ohio passed on Thursday, October 18, 2012. He was born in Toledo, Ohio to Howard and Ida (Wadsworth) Ruby. In his youth he worked at the Toledo Zoo. John was a proud WWII Naval veteran, serving in the South Pacific. Once John returned home he was employed as a Tugboat Captain with Great Lakes Towing Co. for many years until his retirement in 1992. He was a member of VFW Post #9816, Harborview Yacht Club and was a past secretary of the Toledo Longshoremen's union. John was an accomplished artist working in many mediums at the 577 Foundation. He was proud that he maintained his Master Mariner license into his 70's John is survived by his children, Christina (James) Johnson, Roberta Groll, Terry Ruby, John K. (Bonny) Ruby and Rex (Jacqueline) Ruby; stepson, Paul Olsen; grandchildren, Eric, Lindsay and Nicholas Shiple, Zachary Johnson, Amanda Downey, Jennifer and Kaylin Belair, Rex (Scupper) Groll, Hallie, Colin, Katie and Jovin Ruby; wife, Jody Ruby, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ruth Ruby; parents, and brother, Robert C. Ruby.
Family and friends may visit the Freck Funeral Chapel, 1155 S. Wynn Rd. Oregon, Ohio on Monday, October 22, 2012, from 2-7 p.m. where funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. Burial will be private. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sacred Heart Home for the Aged.

I am so sorry to hear of the passing of John! I will never forget all the fun we all had down at the lake and how he "adopted" me for 2 bits! You were all my second family! Now Ruth, John my mom Florence, Jeanne & Windy are all together again!

I loved when John Ruby, my uncle Windy and my Dad got together to celebrate their friendship. It is an excellent positive influence in my life. I will never forget the barbequed Hungarian sandwiches or 4th of July parties we had at the Ruby house on Lake Erie. These gentlemen and their wives set a great model for the following generations to follow. I am glad our parent's families are now all together. The love they taught us is now shared with many. Their love lives in our hearts.

My deepest condolences to the entire Ruby family. As my dad's best friend, he was always part of the Wheeler family. We will miss his warm smile and great humor. He can now resume his game of horseshoes with his buddies.

I love you so much Grandpa, you've always been a great, talented man to look up to. I will cherish all our great times together and those will be what I remember most. John Ruby was a genuinely good kind hearted man who even in his twilight years could light up any room he was in. He was always good for at least one liner that brought a smile to your face no matter how your day was. He also was full of life and energy as he did things most people cant do after age 40, well into his upper 80s and 90s. Which I considered an amazing feat. Ive always referred to him as Grandpa Ruby because he always made me feel so welcome in his home when I would visit with Rex(Grandson) whose been my best friend for 18 years. Rest in Peace Grandpa Ruby, you will be missed and never forgotten.

Dear Chris and family- John was a special man and made me smile over the many years I taught him pottery at 577. He was a talented artist and so fun to watch him use his painting talents in clay...to this day no one has handle glaze painting like he did. His little chuckle when he laughed was as sweet as he was. I am proud to have known such a neat man and my heart goes out to you all during this time of sorrow.
