Jonathan S. Frey
9/10/1946 - 3/5/2023
Jonathan "Jon" Scott Frey passed from this earth March 5, 2023, following a long illness. Jon found his peace with his loving wife Ruth at his side. Jon was born on September 10, 1946, in Buffalo, NY, to John "Ray" Frey and Agnes "Nessie" Frey. On July 27, 1984, he married Ruth A. Frey, who survives in Perrysburg. Jon was predeceased by his mother, Nessie; his father, Ray; and brothers, Roger Frey, and Bruce Frey. Jon is also survived by his sister, Nancy Flanagan of Hamburg, NY; sister-in-law, Helen Frey; his son, Scott (Tiziana) Frey; step-daughter, Stephanie (Mike) Blazevich; step-son, Scott (Kayla) Bowman; grandchildren, Ian Frey, Alex (John) Kohloff, Michael (Riley) Blazevich, Christopher Blazevich, Sabrina Bowman, Bryce Bowman, Joshuah Bowman, Nathan Bowman; and great-grandson, Wyatt Kolhoff.
Jon's life growing up with his family in Hamburg, NY was filled with music. Ray (a professional cellist) and Nessie (a piano teacher) were well-known around the Buffalo, NY area as performers and teachers with several orchestras and chamber ensembles. Jon graduated from Hamburg High School in 1964. An accomplished cellist and pianist himself, Jon was blessed to perform with his family in various musical groups during his school years and as a student at SUNY Fredonia State. Later in life, Jon and Ruth spent many happy hours together in the Peristyle enjoying Toledo Symphony performances. Jon's passion for making music continued his entire life as he enjoyed many hours at the piano at home with Ruth and their best buddy Andy the cat.
Jon truly enjoyed his long and successful career as a sales professional in a number of different industries over the years. He relished close relationships with many colleagues and customers over the length of his career. Not only a salesman, Jon loved learning and understanding the most technical and intricate elements of the products and services he sold. Upon his retirement in 2012, Jon fulfilled a lifelong dream and purchased his sailboat "Molly". He spent many happy hours sailing on Maumee Bay and Lake Erie with family and friends. Even after saying goodbye to Molly, Jon and Ruth continued to enjoy many happy times with friends as members of the Jolly Roger Sailing Club in Toledo. Those friendships endure today. Jon is especially grateful for his friendship with Bill W., which lasted over 34 years and saw many meaningful moments.
Our family will miss Jon's clever wit, his joy at spending time with his family (especially his grandchildren), his willingness to always help solve a problem or install/fix a household system/appliance, and his propensity to share a bit of wisdom at just the right moment. The holidays always held special meaning for Jon and Ruth, as that was the one time of year when most of the family could be together. And so, we will always feel Jon's absence most at that time of year. We'll each miss the quiet moments Jon preferred to share one on one with each of us. Most of all, Ruth will miss Jon's faithful companionship as her true match and partner in this life.
