Karl and I grew up together only a quarter-mile apart on the same road as childhood friends in the same school class outside of Elmore, Ohio, until Karl left our class at Elmore for Port Clinton High starting our junior year. I was born only 5 weeks after him.
We played countless basketball games together in my parents' barn and countless more baseball games together in Karl's home cow pasture next to Toussaint Creek. Karl was physically big and strong, but was never a bully, never raised a fist, always respectful, and often playful.
We both also shared a tough family upbringing, but we both survived and went on our separate ways - I went west and Karl went to the islands that he always loved. So I wondered often over the years what had happened to him, and have discovered his passing only now. Apparently he had lived a very full and widely-appreciated beloved life. A truly successful life - good for him. But I still have the memories of all the good young times we had together back in those quiet peaceful and sunny days of the 50's.

It's hard to imagine middle bass without Karl Schmidlin. He was the very fabric of this community. Everywhere is evidence of his positive influence. Karl, we'll miss that big barrel laugh. Your guidance and help with so many tasks throughout the years. God bless you and your family.

May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow. So sorry to hear of Karl's passing. He was a good man and I truly enjoyed dealing with him as his salesman here at Wolff Bros. He will be missed by everyone who knew him.

As the days and weeks pass, and as you return to life's routine, may you continue to feel comforted by the love and support of family and friends. I am sure all the Island guys were right there to greet you. Werty may have been the first in line. Penny and family sending prayers to you all.

Karl you will be greatly missed by all. I’m truly one of those people. You never pulled a punch-but you said it how it was. I’m sure the Islanders who went before you to Heaven welcomed you with open arms and a Makers Mark in there hands. What a party that must of been. Thank you for everything you ever did for me and my parents. I’ll watch over Penny now as she has watched over me. My heart is aching for all your girls and family. My prayers and love...
