Kay Dean Dauterman

Kay Dean Dauterman, 90 of Maumee, OH passed peacefully surrounded by family at Hospice of Sylvania on January 15, 2025.

Born on July 27, 1934 to the late Donald and Bonnetta (Amos) Dauterman of Portage, OH. He graduated from Bowling Green High School in 1952. Kay worked at Jeep and Martin Perry. He served in the Army from 1957-59. He married Florence R. McClarren in New Jersey. He raised a family in Ottawa Lake while working at Dana in tool and die. Kay continued his education with an Associates Degree from Monroe Community College, an Associates Degree in Applied Science from The University of Toledo in 1971, and a Master of Arts in Education Degree from The University of Michigan in 1975.

A career as a mentor and teacher includes Sylvania Northview and Southview and Whitmer Vocational. After retirement, Kay volunteered at Toledo Correctional to enable the incarcerated to obtain a GED.

Kay remarried in 2000 to Janet (Steele). In retirement they loved to travel. They went to an international family reunion in Germany, Hawaii, a Canadian Cruise, the Panama Canal and many other places.

Kay loved to garden and raise peacocks and pheasants. He loved Michigan Football, the YMCA, attending church and ice cream. Kay had an unwavering commitment to family, community and teaching. Kay had a smile that warmed the hearts of many. Kay will be fondly remembered for his kindness, wisdom and unwavering positivity and love.

Out of his love for education, Kay donated his body to UTMC for the training of future doctors.

Surviving are wife, Janet (Steele); children, Betsy, Ginger, Chris (Lisa); granddaughter, Patricia; and stepdaughter, Patricia (Paterson) (Riticher) (deceased); and stepson, Frank Paterson; numerous great and great-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

There will be a celebration of life at Whiteford Wesleyan Church in Ottawa Lake MI on Saturday February 22 starting at 11:00 a.m. with a reception in the parsonage to follow.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Hospice of Sylvania, The American Cancer Society or a charity of the donor's choice.
