Madelyn Mitchell Obituary

Madelyn "Maddy" Mitchell

August 6, 1938 - March 26, 2025

Madelyn Carol Mitchell (nee Flanagan) passed away in the care of Hospice of Toledo surrounded by her loving family on March 26, 2025. Maddy was born in 1938, the oldest of 3 children from the union of William and Helyn Flanagan. Maddy married Richard Mitchell on August 25, 1956. They had 3 children, Richard, Theresa, and Michael. They divorced in 1983.

Maddy grew up in East Toledo and attended Good Shepherd and Sacred Heart grade schools. She attended Central Catholic High School three years, graduating from Clay High School in 1956. Maddy played the trombone in high school band and was a member of the National Honor Society.

Maddy was athletic her whole life. She played softball and basketball in her youth. In her adult life she coached young women's CYO softball and basketball. Maddy was involved at the Catholic Club and Good Shepherd School athletic boards.

Maddy enjoyed animals, caring for many family pets throughout her life. She expressed her compassion for animals, feeding and sheltering any stray that happened by the back door. In her high school years Maddy boarded and rode her horse at Pearson Park.

Maddy was employed throughout her adult life. She worked at LOF Credit Union, now Glass City Federal Credit Union, St. Vincent Hospital, Jobst Institute, retiring from Mercy Health. After retirement Maddy volunteered at Mercy St. Anne Hospital.

Maddy enjoyed camping and travelling with longtime friend, Gloria. The two of them made many trips to Florida visiting friends and family. Her favorite destinations were Key West and fall foliage trips to Gatlinburg.

Family was Maddy's greatest treasure. She enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren immensely. Birthdays and holidays were celebrated by a card, a visit, or a special day trip. Christmas Eve at Grandmas was an open house potluck attended by loads of family members and dear friends. With the fireplace aglow, all in attendance claimed their favorite seats and waited for St. Nicholas to arrive.

Maddy is survived by son, Rick (Kelly); daughter, Theresa (Terry); son, Michael (Heather); brother, Patrick; sister-in-law, Joann Flanagan; grandchildren, Brenda (Mark), Jason, Rachelle, Timothy and Erin (Travis), Mathew, Hannah and Jacob; great-grandchildren, Taylor, Walker Lewis, Charlotte (Lottie) Rae; and extended family. Maddy was preceded in death by her parents; brother, William; and sister-in-law, Diane Flanagan.

Visitation will be from 3:00-8:00 p.m., Sunday, March 30, 2025, at the Michael W. Pawlak Funeral Home, 1640 Smith Rd. at Jackman, Temperance, Michigan. Maddie was a wonderful neighbor. She and Gloria were wonderful to Cindy and I when we moved in next door way back in the early 90's. Many memories, she will be missed.
