Patrick J. McGrady
Patrick J. McGrady passed away peacefully on August 19, 2025. Born in Toledo, Ohio, Pat was the son of Lou and Mary McGrady.
Pat married Angele (Vial) McGrady in Bronxville, New York, and together they built a loving family. He was a proud father to Michele McGrady, PhD, of Kalamazoo, Michigan, and Kevin McGrady (Brandy), of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He cherished his grandchildren, Louwyn and Evelyn, and took great joy in watching them grow.
Pat's educational journey began at St. Clement Grade School, where he was inducted into the school hall of fame, then continued at St. Francis de Sales High School. He earned a B.A. in Food Marketing from Western Michigan University and an MBA from Michigan State University, where he was a scholarship recipient through Foodtown.
His professional career was marked by dedication and leadership. Pat began as a carrier for The Blade, working a route for 14 years before passing it on to his younger brothers. He worked at Foodtown as an assistant manager and taught food marketing at Owens Community College. Pat served as CEO of St. Clement's Credit Union, Toledo Area Catholic Credit Union, and Directions Credit Union. Under his leadership, assets grew from $2 million to $340 million over 34 years.
Pat's influence extended nationally. He was Chairman of the Credit Union Executive Society (CUES) Board of Directors and was inducted into the CUES Hall of Fame. He also served as Director and Chairman of Card Services for Credit Unions and was named Professional of the Year by the Ohio Credit Union League. Appointed by the governor, he served on the Ohio Credit Union Council. Pat also founded the CEO Institute program, which continues to educate credit union leaders. He remained active as a member and advisor for CURE (Credit Union Retired Executives).
His commitment to service included roles on the Lourdes University Board of Directors and as a Paul Harris Fellow with the Toledo Rotary.
Pat was deeply involved with St. Francis de Sales High School throughout his life, serving on the development board, board of trustees, and as chairman. He initiated the Salesian Leadership Program and supported students through the McGrady Family Scholarship, cherishing letters of appreciation from recipients. He was a recipient of the Golden Knight award. Pat also served his community as a member of the Catholic Foundation Board for the Diocese of Toledo.
Beyond his professional and philanthropic life, Pat had many passions. He was an avid genealogist, tracing his family roots across Germany, Ireland, and the United States-even checking phone books for "McGrady" entries during his travels. He took pride in being part of one of the first families in Ohio and later compiled electronic versions of his family history.
Pat was a lifelong Notre Dame sports fan, and his attachment to the Irish began with his dad.
He was also an avid coin collector, always looking at his change or sorting through bags of coins to find that one rare item. Pat enjoyed playing bridge with friends, and always made sure the lively conversations didn't interrupt keeping score.
Pat always worked to keep in shape, keeping a regular two-mile running circuit with friends. He completed one half marathon in Washington, DC. When Pat moved to Sylvania, he was a regular at Olander Park and circled the lake at least twice a day, six days a week. Pat was a terrific dancer. He loved 50s and 60s Rock 'n' Roll, and when his songs hit, he owned the dance floor.
Pat's legacy is one of leadership, generosity, and joy. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and the many communities he served.
Patrick was preceded in death by his parents; and sisters, Maureen Leffel, and Janeen Roth. He is survived by his wife, Angele; children, Michele and Kevin (Brandy); and brothers, Michael McGrady, MD, Daniel McGrady, Dennis McGrady; and nieces and nephews.
