Richard Meyer Obituary

Richard John Meyer

Richard John Meyer, 81, died on Saturday, September 20, 2025. Born in Detroit, Michigan, on August 14, 1944, to John and Jennie Meyer, he was raised in Prospect Park, New Jersey, and lived with his family for many years in Perrysburg, Ohio, before retiring and then moving to Minden, Nevada, in 2013.

Surviving are his wife of more than 50 years, Mary (Bell) Meyer; his children, Montie Meyer (Tom Harris), Allie Meyer (Vince Szabo), and Karl Meyer (Emily Tsai); one grandchild, Niko Meyer Tsai; siblings, Janet Kuperus (Harry), Anne Christenson (Randall), and Stuart Meyer (Sheila); many nieces and nephews; several cousins; and many devoted friends.

Rich graduated from Eastern Christian High School in North Haledon, New Jersey, and earned a bachelor's degree at Calvin College and a master's degree in English Literature at Ohio University. During the Vietnam War, he performed service as a conscientious objector at the Athens Mental Health Center. After teaching in Baltimore and working at a medical library in New York City, he was employed and later retired as a letter carrier with 30 years of service from the U.S. Postal Service in Toledo, Ohio.

Rich enjoyed listening to 1950's doo-wop and Beethoven symphonies, staying healthy through personal exercise and fitness, and supporting and proudly following his children's educational, musical and sports activities. Yearly camping trips were part of family life. Rich ran marathons before switching to backpacking and hiking up and down the East Coast (including segments of the Appalachian Trail) and most recently in the Sierra Nevada. For the past 10 years he and his wife, Mary, have led a weekly hiking group that explores the California and Nevada mountains. He held a strong Christian faith.

Rich loved reading books of all kinds and discussing his strongly held ideas about society and the world, while also carefully listening to others' perspectives. Most of all, Rich valued his family, all of whom will miss his unconditional love and support.

Arrangements are by Nevada Funeral Services. A celebration of life will be held in the upcoming months.

Dear Montie and family,
I am sorry for your loss. I would have enjoyed meeting him. I am sure we´ve hiked some of the same trails in the Sierras. They must have been a taste of heaven that was to come.

Rich was one of a kind. I was fortunate to spend time with him at the RC Post Office each morning. He was a wealth of knowledge on a multitude of topics, his favorite being his family. Seneca Rocks WV came highly recommended for my young family which opened the door of his many adventures. The joy of Rich entering my world impacted my life in a very positive way. He is one of the good guys.

So sad to see about Rich passing. I worked with him for many years at the RC post office. He actually got my route after I had bid off it. In the last month I was in contact with his daughter on linkedin.com to have her get him in touch with me. I always enjoyed discussing current events with him. He was very proud of the accomplishments of his children. God Bless his family.

We are so sorry Mary, siblings, and children. It was such a shock. He will be welcomed into the arms of Jesus. May you be comforted that there is the after life, and he will be with Uncle John and Aunt Jen. What a homecoming that will be

I always enjoyed the conversations Rich and I had. He was encouraging, and very easy to talk to. I loved our time on the trails, and will miss his light-hearted banter. I am thankful I was able to hike with the group on what turned out to be his final Monday on the trails. And we so often did, I got a nice hug : ) Many prayers for Mary and her family.
Love, Sabrina
