Richard Roberts Obituary

Richard "Dick" Roberts

9/12/1932 - 11/23/2022

Dr. Richard "Dick" Henry Roberts passed away peacefully at his home on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, on November 23, 2022. He was preceded in death by his parents; his "better half" and dear wife of 63 years, Nancy; and his son, Chris. Dick is survived by his five remaining children, Steve, Pam, Kevin, Lisa, and David; and 18 grandchildren.

Dick, the only child of Paul and Mary Roberts, was born on September 12, 1932, in Herrin, Illinois, and raised in Trenton, Michigan. Dick received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1954 with a major in Zoology, received his Medical Doctor degree in 1961, and completed his residency in Pediatrics in 1966, all from the University of Michigan.

Between his undergraduate and graduate school studies, Dick volunteered for the Army Reserves and proudly served his country with the occupying forces in Europe before his honorable discharge in 1956.

In 1968, shortly after completing his residency, he met Drs. John Tansey and Raymond Buganski. Together they created a pediatric practice that expanded over the years and is remembered as Drs. Tansey, Buganski, Roberts and Torsekar. Dick and Nancy Roberts raised their family in Sylvania where Dick attended to the care of many of the children of his community. Their time in Sylvania was often spent in the company of good friends in a home that served as the setting for many lively gatherings.

Following Dr. Roberts' retirement from his medical practice, Dick and Nancy moved first to Daufuskie Island, South Carolina, an island community they came to love when on family vacations. During their final two years, they were residents at Tidepointe community on Hilton Head Island.

A lifelong University of Michigan fan and supporter, Dick enjoyed tailgating at Michigan home football games and celebrated each game with his wife Nancy, a fellow UMich alum, before her death in August 2022. Sadly, Dick and Nancy both passed away before they could celebrate the Wolverines' recent trouncing of the Buckeyes.

There will be a private family memorial. Islandfuneralhome.com.

With great love comes deep grief. I am extremely sorry for the loss of your Dad. Dr. Roberts was an amazing physician....loved by my children and myself. He got us through some difficult times always showing compassion, comfort and genuine caring. Nancy was his perfect match! Kind, inviting and always had time to talk where ever we might be. The beautiful memories of their love for you and each other and knowing they are reunited will bring you peace. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. May God give you peace.

I first met Dr. Roberts thru my boss. Dr Roberts´ family would come into his dental practice. I would frequently watch my boss´s children and need Dr. Roberts to make house calls when they were ill. Dr. Roberts brought me into his practice when I had my own children.
Wonderful group of caring doctors.
Prayers for the family!

So sad to hear. Such a wonderful doctor and compassionate gentleman. He went above and beyond taking care of our sick ones. So sorry for your loss.
