Susan Rink Obituary

Susan Rink

09/09/1960 - 10/04/2024

Susan was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. She was known for many things, but her hard-working, helpful, and loving nature was the essence of who she was. She lived a life of service, always thinking of others, and helping those she loved however she could. Aside from her husband, Craig, Susan's children and grandchildren were her whole world. She touched many people with her kindness that will not be forgotten. Sadly, Susan was taken from us too soon. She passed away with her family by her side on October 4, 2024, at Toledo Hospital. While it is true she was a fierce fighter and giver, it is also true that she suffered from disease not typically named in obituaries. Susan suffered from depression and alcohol addiction, and ultimately passed away from it, leaving her family utterly broken. Susan had a family that she adored and that adored her. She had so many reasons to live and access to help. In the months preceding her death, she had made so many turns for the better. She was bright, getting healthier, and excited for her next chapter. Yet, addiction still won. In the recent weeks, when the stress and pain of hers and those close to her became heavy, she sought out her crutch one last time, and it was one time too many. Susan's addiction and depression does not define her life, but it ended it. Susan hid her battle from most, but she would want her life, as well as her passing, to help and bring light to someone else's darkness, so that no one else shares in that pain.

Susan is survived by her children, Stephanie Elvey Cleland (Michael Cleland) and Ashley Elvey Wuellner; stepdaughter, Renee Miller (Danny Miller); and her grandchildren, Aveline, Zander, Olivia and Aubrey. She is also survived by her siblings, Vicky, Donny, Steve, Diana (Stickel), Patsy, Cindy, Scott, and Kat; and many nieces and nephews. Susan was preceded death by her husband, Craig Elvey; her parents, Thomas Rink and Kathleen Mayer; and her brother, Tommy.

Even in death, Susan believed in helping others. Per her wishes, her body will be donated to U.T.M.C. for medical research, and a private celebration of life will be held in the presence of immediate family and friends.

What a beautiful tribute to your mother and, hopefully, an empowering way to help others who also struggle in the dark. May each of you find some peace in this most difficult of times.

sincerely,
Dave
