Terry Albert Telfer

Terry Albert Telfer, age 74, died March 23, 2022 at his home in Temperance, Michigan from natural causes. Born in Monroe, he received his undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He earned his doctorate degrees in Early American Literature and Early American History from Bowling Green State University in Ohio.

He is survived by his wife, Ann; son, Daniel (Natasha); stepsons, Joshua, Jeremy, and Jason (Angela); five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Mary Lola (Ramsey) Telfer.

Terry developed a love of learning that he passed on to his students. As an English professor at Monroe County Community College for 25 years, he broadened students' understanding of literature, poetry, and drama. Dr. Telfer created four popular courses in MCCC's curriculum – Visual Media Literacy, Women's Writings, Film and Society (1920-60), and Film and Society (1960-present). He served as the consultant and moderator for films shown during "The Big Read". He published poetry as well as over 80 articles online.

Terry was a member of the Socialist Equality Party for 20 years and wrote on a variety of topics for its online publication. He worked as the campus advisor to the International Youth and Students for Social Equality.

He motivated, inspired, and guided thousands of students. He would often stay late after class, helping them with their life struggles in addition to academics. He was always willing to respectfully engage in conversation with others with differing ideas, often interjecting with thoughtful questions and his subtle humor.

Terry enjoyed athletics and was an avid University of Michigan sports fan. He followed Red Wings Hockey, was interested in antique and racing cars, film noir, and spending time with his family, friends, and his canine companion, Jasmine. Colleagues, students, family, and friends all recognize that he was a kind and giving person, connected to them and dedicated to the betterment of humanity.

Visitation will be Thursday, March 31 from 1:30-4:30 at Sujkowski Funeral Home Northpointe, 114 E. Alexis Rd. with a sharing of memories at 3:30 led by Dr. Ronald K. Brown.
