William Spath Obituary

SPATH

Dr. William "Bill" J.

Dr. William "Bill" J. Spath passed away on Wednesday, January 2, 2013, at Manor of Perrysburg at the age of 84. He was born in Toledo, Ohio to George and Dorothy (Lodge) Spath on April 22, 1928.

Bill came from humble beginnings to become a serviceman, a leader in his profession, and a wonderful father and husband. In his early years, he was a 124-pound all-city guard for Woodward High School where he graduated in 1946. He went on to graduate from Ohio University and Case Western University, School of Dentistry. In 1952 he entered the United States Air Force and served two and half years in Okinawa, Japan where he was the base Dental Officer. In 1956 he bought a dental practice on the corner of Madison and Erie in downtown Toledo where he practiced for over 30 years.

Bill married Susan Warns, the love of his life and mother of his three children, Lindsey, Bill, and Andrew. In August they celebrated 37 years of marriage.

Bill loved sailing, skiing, and making others laugh. He had a gift of living every day to the fullest and he never turned down an adventure. It may have been as simple as a snowmobile trip to the Turtle Club on half frozen ice, or sailing off on a six-month journey with three small children, a tutor and his wife. Bill was one of a kind. In spite of his loss of abilities he never lost his way with people. On this day he is in a better place.

Bill is survived by his wife, Susan (Warns); children, Lindsey (Matthew) Roth, Bill and Andrew Spath; grandsons, Cole and Luke Roth.

Family and friends may be received for a memorial mass on Monday, January 7, 2013, at St. Rose Church, 215 East Front Street, Perrysburg starting at 10:30 a.m. There will be a memorial gathering afterwards to share fond memories of Bill. Memorial Contributions may be made in the name of Dr. William Spath to Wounded Warriors Project, online at www.woundedwarriorsproject.org or by mail to 9899 Belfort Rd. Suite 300, Jacksonville, FL 32256.

Mrs. Spath,

I am so sorry for your loss. My memories of Mr. Spath are many from him helping coach the St. John's football team to the countless times I spent the night with Billy at your house in grade school. But my fondest memory is when he said if I made weight to play running back he would buy me pizza after the football weigh in and we would celebrate. I will never forget how friendly and upbeat Mr. Spath was all the time. Again I extend my deepest sympathies and prayers during this time.

So sorry to hear of Bill's passing. He was my dentist long ago and I remember well how much fun both Bill and Sue always were (yes, they made it fun to go to the dentist!).

I also remember when you took off on your sailing adventure, Sue, and thought how brave and adventurous you were. I doubt you'll remember me, but I'll always remember you -- and how early in your life Bill became so important to you.

Sue and Family, I am so sorry to learn of the death of Bill. He was a very special person with great wit, very bright, and very well respected by all who had the opportunity to know Bill. Susan and family, in itself death is not a tragedy when a peaceful and dignified death follows a life which was blessed with health and vitality of of mind, spirt and body,a life rich in good deeds, then death cannot be regarded as tragic, no matter how great the loss and sorrow. Solomon once said a good name is better than precious oil....most of all Bill Spath had a great name. A great loss to all who loved and cared for bill ! Jerry Chabler
