Robert Mauer Obituary

Robert, "Bob" Mauer
February 29, 1956 - February 3, 2021
Tacoma, Washington - Robert Willam Mauer, or "Chef Bob," left us unexpectedly to take up residence in his final fishing spot on Wednesday, February 3rd, 2021. He is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of 42 years, Gretchen, and their children, Max and Victoria (husband Ryan and son Waylon). He leaves behind his mother (Jeanette), sisters Roanna (Mike), Dianna (Rob), and Michelle (late husband Scott), his brother Marc (Karen), sister-in-law Karen (Mike) and their families. He was preceded in death by his father, John (Jack) Mauer. He was part of a tight-knit extended family, and he loved and was unconditionally beloved by all. Bob's charisma, humor, generosity, openness, and kindness made all who entered his family's circle feel right at home. Bob was fortunate to have many cherished memories of enjoyable times spent with cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends near and far. Over the course of his career, he combined his passion for cooking, working with those in the restaurant industry, and creating a sense of community in whatever kitchen he found himself. He also enjoyed any opportunity to teach and mentor culinary students. His most memorable work experiences were managing the kitchen at Affairs in University Place and running the test kitchen at Bargreen Ellingson in Tacoma. He was planning to retire as an executive chef from Schulz Associates, a position that was a culmination of all the culinary expertise and wisdom he cultivated throughout his career. He was happiest when spending time with his wife and family, fishing, playing guitar and cooking for his loved ones. He was a loyal friend to anyone that knew him, and he will be missed deeply by so many.

I miss my brother every day. He used to come through my front door about once a month when he was in Portland on business. He would lean in the doorway of our living room and say "Hi Sis!". Then he would give me the biggest hug as only Bob could give. I would try to have a home cooked meal because he was eating restaurant food on his trip but often we would go out and have some yummy dinner with the best conversation which included solving all the problems of the world. He was so funny and so kind. He loved his wife and kids fiercely. There was no end to his generosity of self. I still see his smile but I will miss his hugs forever.

Knowing Bob has been one of the great joys of my life! To say Bob touched my heart and soul is an understatement. Little did i know that from the first day we met my life was going to change for the better. Wherever I went with Bob he made people around us smile and feel important. Throughout the years I found myself emulating Bob’s compassion and sincere interest in others. To this day I ask myself What Would Bob Do in this situation?
Bob had a way of opening the door of opportunities to myself and countless others. Sometimes it wasn’t an action but something he would say that would be insightful and help me to look at situations differently. I had a lot of “Firsts” with Bob - 1st Salmon trip , Hunting trip, Hot Spring, Musical Jam Session and my first Job in Construction. Little did i know 45 years later I would still be in Construction.
Whatever activity we did together was an adventure in living, making the most of every day! This tribute to Bob ( The most wonderful man and friend I have ever known ), only scratches the surface of how much Bob means to me, saying he will be missed doesn’t begin to express my sadness and loss. May God Bless You.. Gretchen, Victoria, Max and Family...
I Love you, you will always be in my prayers.

I can still see you coming through my front door with a “Hi Sis!” and a great bear hug. I miss you every single day. My brother had a generous spirit and had a wonderful way of making everyone feel special. My kids were the first of our family’s niece and nephew clan and they called him Uncle Bob-ecue. They knew early where the good food came from! Bob brought us Gretchen and later Victoria and Max and grandson Waylon. It will be easy to keep your memories alive. You were a good man and a wonderful brother to me. I will love you forever.
