Robert Jordan Obituary

JORDAN - Elder Robert Lee Jordan Sr. was born in St. Marys, Ga., to Mrs. Jannie Mae and Harvey Jordan Sr. (deceased) on May 8, 1934.
He was the fifth of seven children, including Harvey Jordan Jr., Mabel Johnson, Louise Jones, James (Jimmie) Jordan, who all preceded him in death. His dear sister, Deloris (Lola) Sullivan of St. Marys, Ga., and brother Melvin Brooks (Carol) of Lathrup Village, Mich., remain to cherish his memory.
Elder Jordan was educated in the Camden County Schools system, and at that time, he aspired to join the U.S. Army. When he returned home after completing his tenure in the military, he acquired a new dream, to become a certified general contractor. Because of his faith in God, hard work, determination, persistence, and much prayer, he realized his dream and was listed among the best contractors in area. Although his construction talent manifested itself on a part-time basis, he built or renovated numerous homes, businesses and structures.
Elder Jordan was a full-time employee of Gilman Paper Company, retiring in 1995 after 38 years. His work with the company was one of pride and commitment, and it enabled him to be a great provider for his wife and children.
Elder Jordan was always a family man. He married the love of his life, the late Dr. Liz Griffin, on Aug. 31, 1953, and remained married for 58 years, until her death Oct. 10, 2011. He was never modest in expressing the pride he possessed for his wife's and children's accomplishments.
During the 91 years of his life, Elder Robert Jordan Sr. made many accomplishments. He served as vice president of the St. Marys Elementary School PTA. He is noted to be the first African-American volunteer fireman in St. Marys, Ga., and the first African-American to transfer from a paper machine at Gilman Paper Company to an upgraded position. He served as treasurer for the Sweetwater Branch Recreation Association, chairman of the Cemetery Association, and was a member of the Industrial Department Authority. He also served as the first Ralph J. Bunche/Camden County Training School Alumni president. At one time, he owned four businesses: a general contracting business, a commercial shrimping business, and two restaurants, named after two important women in his life, his wife and youngest daughter, "Liz's Burger Grill" and "Felecia's Butter Fried Chicken." The restaurants were housed in a building that he erected himself.
Despite Elder Jordan's full schedule, he made service to God and his church his highest priorities. He served as a member of the men's choir, Sunday School teacher, Ordained Deacon, chairman of the Trustee Board and elder at Wheeler Street Church of God for several decades.
Elder Robert Jordan, Sr. leaves to cherish his memory his loving children, Robine Jordan Dawson (Howard) of St. Marys, Ga., Angela L. Jordan of St. Marys/Savannah, Ga., Robert L. Jordan Jr. (Karen Dannette) of Titusville, Fla., and Dr. Felecia F. Jordan Jackson of Tallahassee, Fla.; six grandchildren, Dr. Erica N. Dawson of Lawrenceville, Ga., Robert (Robbey) Jordan III (Olivia) of Titusville, Fla., Kimberly Dawson Blaine (Anthony) of Acworth, Ga., Kristina D. Jordan of Clearwater, Fla., and Jordan L. Jackson and Angeleena E. Jackson, both of Tallahassee, Fla.; two great-grandchildren, Anthony (AJ) Blaine and Kinsley G. Blaine of Acworth, Ga.; three godchildren, Alicia K. Floyd of St. Marys, Ga., Kristen M. Jones of Marietta, Ga., and Lydia Bess Cohen of Jacksonville, Fla.; brother in-law, Bishop Verdell R. Griffin Sr. of St. Marys, Ga.; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, church members and friends.
Visitation and viewing will take place 10-11 a.m. Saturday, Aug., 23, 2025, followed immediately by homegoing services at 11 a.m., both at Wheeler Street Church of God, 900 Wheeler St. in St. Marys.
Interment with military rites will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery in St. Marys.
The repast will be at the Wheeler Street Church of God's social hall.
Final arrangements entrusted to Royal Funeral Home in Jesup, Ga.
