Dominick DeLuca Obituary

Dominick "Dom" DeLuca, PhD A memorial service for Dominick "Dom" DeLuca, PhD, Professor of Immunobiology at The University of Arizona College of Medicine, will be held Monday, December 10, at 3 p.m. in DuVal Auditorium at University Medical Center, 1501 N. Campbell Ave., Tucson. An expert in Type 1 diabetes, Dom passed away October 26, 2007. He was born October 27, 1946 in Washington DC to Anthony G. and Dorothy (Collins) DeLuca. He earned B.S. and PhD degrees from UCLA. He joined the faculty of the University of Arizona in 1990, where he was involved in research, service and teaching until his death. A diabetic himself, Dom was an activist for diabetes research and education. He received the prestigious College of Medicine Vernon and Virginia Furrow Award for Innovation in Medical Education in 2004 for developing an automated mannequin simulation of a diabetic/asthmatic patient. For his knowledge and contributions to diabetes education in Arizona, the Arizona Diabetes Control Council honored Dom in 2001 for co-authoring the Bill of Rights for Diabetics. He also received the first "Cure, Care and Commitment" award from the American Diabetes Association in 2004. He is survived by his wife, Janet Decker, PhD; daughter, Larissa; mother, Dorothy; and brother, Ted. The family suggests that donations in his memory be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation or the American Diabetes Association.

My thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time. Dom was a warm loving person. Dom was my first boss at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston South Carolina. He taught me many of the skills I have used at work for the past 27 years and I will always be grateful.
