Douglas Jones Obituary

Douglas Jones graced us with 80 years and left us on May 27th. Born in Lansing, MI on June 27, 1942 whereas a teenager he built and raced dragster's before he was old enough to drive. In 1966, he married his middle school sweetheart and later moved their family to Tucson, AZ where they founded Sabino Electric, in 1981. His love of racing continued, but his love of hiking and traveling excelled. He hiked the Grand Canyon not once, but twice and traveled the world. Doug's dedication to his family was matched by his dedication to public service and philanthropy. He was appointed to numerous boards, many as chairman or president; Rotary, YMCA, Lighthouse YMCA, Electric League of Arizona, American Subcontractors Association (now known as ACT), Tucson/Pima Electrical Code Committee, Southern Arizona National Electrical Contractor's Association, National Alliance for the Mentally Ill of Southern Arizona, Minuteman (now known as Air Guardians), and the TEGG Advisory Committee. In 1989, Doug was Man of the Year Electric League of Arizona, YMCA's 2016 Hall of Fame Member, and in 2022 Doug was recognized for over 30 years of dedicated service to the Unionized Electric Industry and the Tucson Community. Last but not least, the Flying Samaritans appreciated the time, talent, and monetary donations to build 2 clinics in Mexico.

He's described by many as a great friend and a real gentleman and will be missed. He was preceded by his wife Sandra Jones, parents Bruce and Marion Jones. He's survived by his daughters Cynthia Jones and Louise Jones-Magee (Bobby), siblings Gordon Jones (Sandra), Pat Brehse (Chuck), Carolyn Baumgart (Barry), and grandson Matthew Magee.

A memorial will be held from 11:00am to 1:00pm and from 4:00pm to 6:00pm on June 16th, 2023 at Adair Funeral Home-Dodge Chapel located at 1050 North Dodge Boulevard, Tucson. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made payable to the Tucson Electrical Joint Apprenticeship &Training Program (TEJATP). Please contact (520) 323-1622 for details and payment options or mail check care of TEJATP to Southern Arizona NECA, Inc., Attn: Cindy Flowers, 2500 North Tucson Boulevard, Suite 114, Tucson, AZ 85716.

I was so sad to hear of the passing of such a beloved community member. I knew Doug through his tireless work with the 162nd Air Guardians. He was a kind gentleman and it was always a pleasure working/volunteering with him on the military causes he tirelessly advocated for. I sincerely will miss him. Condolences to the Jones family at this very difficult time.

I was fortunate to meet Doug when he joined our Minuteman committee ( now Air Guardians ) many years ago. Always a great sense of humor and always had an unknown factoid waiting for the unsuspecting. He was very generous to many people and such a great supporter of the 162 Wing. A very involved and very helpful man. The community has truly lost a great friend. My thoughts and prayers to the family. George Rutter LtCol(ret). Franklin Michigan.

Doug was a very quiet, yet friendly person. I used to tease him about the days of his youth in Michigan. He always responded with a smile. Tom Eiff, former Catalina Rotarian
